God hates me....and my transmission

Soo......I'm going down the road. Third has been known to make a little bit of a hickup. Third madae the hickup....again, again, and again. All day today it made that sound. Then, boom, out of no where. I have no 1st, 2nd, 5th, or reverse gears. I was not enthused. So, it's time for a new transmission. Anyone else have to replace their transmissions yet? If so, gimmie a price range.

And It's definately not the clutch. 3rd and 4th hit fine. :bs: I believe that I'm about to sacrifice my P5 to the Mazda gods, and tell them to stick it up their ass, where it belongs.

Thanks alot

Someone else just did the same exact thing in their MSP. Only can use 3 and 4 too. Probably busted shift fork and its jammed in ther.e

Yeah, thats what I'm thinking. If it comes down to a major major bill, I might sell my P5. It'll be hard, I'm attatched to it so bad. I love the car. But it's becoming quite the bill.

If you're out of warranty, expect to pay about 1600 to drop a used tranny in there (including labor).

Why not just fix the tranny?
Manual trannies aren't that bad to work on from what I've done with them, helped TurfBurn rebuild his in an afternoon...

Ha, i just found out that my uncle (also a P5 guy) has an extra manual tranny. Looks like I know what my graduation presents gona be. Ha, looks like I'm keepin the P5....yes!

lol....thanks alot for the help guys

Look on you door and see if your car was made before 2.02. I recently read that if the tranny is out of a P5 that was made after 2/02 then it has stronger syncros, shift forks, etc. You can drop and replace the tranny yourself. I just took two days to replace my clutch and flywheel. We pulled the whole tranny out of the car. If you want to fix your old one, then take it to a shop already out of the car. This will save you tons of money if you don't want to crack open the case.

So sooner or later 100% of these trannies will break the same way? How the heck is Mazda a reliable make? I bet if I trade it for a '91 Integra with rusted-ass rear fenders, it will last me longer...

I don't know how reliable the autos are, but at least the make it past 50K, but maybe not.

his name is quickshift. he probably slams the gears. don't worry if you drive it with care.

I also read this somewhere on here... transmissions after that date on the P5 are the same as the MSP and is of better quality and stronger.

Yeah, thanks :) I've been taking it super easy on the car. I found that you don't really have to shift "fast" to have fun. It only takes a fraction of a second longer to treat it right, if you know what I mean. I'm still learning, of course :D

I spent too much time researching this and I remember reading that also...I guess I'll just save some money for a rebuild in the future. There is really not a car out there that I would rather have. Mazda certainly made this an awesome car in many regards (yippy).

If you have the other later of the two tranny's then the only thing I would worry with is reinforcing the shift forks. Equinox did this with the older of the tranny's and his car is turbo. He hasn't broken a shift fork since.

I think these kids are just to hard on the tranny, or they can't shift worth dick. I suggest they'd prematurely break any tranny. Seems like all the ones that have trouble on the forum always have plenty of money or parts sources for repairs, so I can't feel to sorry for them.

I really wasn't hard on my tranny. I would shift hard on occasion, but not so hard to mess it up. 3rd gear was a problem from the day I got the car. I know how to drive the stick. I just wanted to know the price range of transmissions. Thanks alot for all the replies, they've helped alot. And I plan on treating my transmission alot better. Yes, I am young. And I have alot of learning to do on cars. Thanks again

I didn't really mean to slam you. I was the same way but with an old farm truck as my first car. But in general I think tranny's aren't as robust as they could be unless they are meant for a performance car. When I was young it used to snow tons more than it does now and with the auto's it was Reverse-Drive, Reverse-Drive, to rock it back * forth to get unstuck. I think that wore them out early too.

Oh, I know. I was just saying that I did drive it with care. I just feel that something was wrong with the transmission before I bought the car used. Something just wasn't right about it. All the other P5's that I have drove didn't s*** like it. They were alot smoother. I just thing that it was given hell before I obtained the car, lol. Either way around, I've got a few of my friends and family gona cut me some deals on getting my transmissiion in and all that good stuff. Keep it real, guys. And thanks for all the help.
