i've given out somewhere around 25 invites in the past 4 months, and still have 6 left to give.

Yeah they just gave me 15 invites, i gave like 10 of them away to friends/coworkers who don't already have gmail...I have 5 left.

I'm convinved it's all a plan. Make it so you can't sign up, you have to be invited....it makes it more alluring

exactly, there are still loads of people who still want one and don't have one.

i also think part of it is for scalibility testing. they can manage the max number of users at each level of invite.
