GI: Transmission Gearsets

i'm getting ready to fill up my tranny today...

I'm thinking redline heavyweight... I was gonna use shockproof or whatever the hell that is... Isnt heavyweight harder on synchros?

heavyweight is fine.. the lighter ones are supposedly too "slippery" for synchros... I run lightweight and haven't had problems at all... my 1-2 is a bit stiff but I have an mp3 transmission and no kartboy bushings.. so it's about as crappy as it gets that way ;).

I thought our cars used MT-90

Yes, but the discussion above is about going to heavier fluids in the hope of dealing with a "lubrication" issue that is being mentioned...

I don't think heavier fluids are a bad idea at all.. and one of the reasons I run the shockproof lightweight.. BUT I don't think it will do ANYTHING to save the tranny at this point.

I totalyy agree, maybe though, it will help prolong the failure.

Yeah... and you've seen the failed trannies in person and talked directly to experienced shops on these too so that is certainly worth a lot... i think the heavy fluids are at the least a good first step... people worried about "driveability" should lighten up as I highly dobut their clutches and traction and the like are all that "friendly" now :) So a little stiffer gear switch when the car is cold is something ya'll should be able to live with for the hopeful reduction in risk....

That or get Nick's gears and you'll have not to worry about any of it.

Well, I'm going to give this AMS Oil 75-140 Severe Duty a shot. I've read good things about it. I'm not going to be making the HP some of you guys do. I'm only shooting for 275 to 300whp, but I do plan on at least one road course event. I have one of the Mocal pumps, maybe I should just go on a do the cooler.

thats exactly what is in my tranny... and I can tell you, that heavyweight sticks like glue to the funnel... be prepared for it to take a long time to pour.

but I guess thats a good thing, it will hang on the gears a lot better.

Could boil it in some water to warm it up a bit so that it flows better. This was a tip an old school V8 guy told me about. Other tip was keep a shaker full of coarse ground pepper in the car. If you get a radiator leak, you pour it in the radiator after the water starts flowing and it'll plug the leak (I've actually seen this one work.).

An egg will work well for that too. It will heat up and then find the crack and fill it.

Ok so this is what I'd like to know. What exactly going to be included (obviously gears but what else). And what modifications to what parts will be done to reduce the apparent problems our trannies seem to be having (ie better synchos, or closer tolerances or stronger input/output shafts or better lubrication system ...). And what's the general price range ya'll are shooting for.

Oh and I've been told that straight cut gears can handle more hp but have to be held in gear otherwise they have a tendency to pop out. IE fine for the track but lousy for daily driving. Is this correct?
