Getting ready for trans and coolant change..need advice

I just bought 3 quarts of redline mt-90 and am going to change out the trans fluid this weekend. Is there any tips as to changing it? I know sometimes you need to buy some hose to fill it back up. Whats the best procedure?

Secondly, should I be looking for genuine Mazda coolant? and what would be the best mixture. I live in IL so the weather is up and down year round.

Thanks in advance!

Go to a crotch rocket shop and get Engine Ice or Liquid Performance Coolant. Pricey, but great stuff. Even with FL weather and the stock I/C, heat soak wasn't too bad. You should also get a funnel with a hose to fill the tranny case.

How many quarts of engine coolant does the msp need?

pretty sure it takes 4. Can't find the owner's manual right now, but that's what I remember putting in.

So two bottles should be sufficient? And what do you suggest in terms of water/coolant mixing. I sent you a PM and I don't know if you got it, but I was curious to know if you suggest any mixing or just straight engine ice. I'm in GA by the way and its pretty dang hot but it doesn't get extremely cold in the winter (hardly ever less than 20 degrees if it even gets that cold--usually above freezing).

Straight coolant... It's pre mixed with de-ionized water. Some Hyabusa owners claimed a difference of 15 degrees Farenheit. www.engineice.cc

On that same topic, do you know anything about changing the thermostat? Like what thermostat we should get for our cars? I've heard that Autozone for example sells them, but I don't know what temp range I should get one for. Can anyone give me a link to a part on a website or a part number to look for?

No idea... I can find out tomorrow. Is your car running cold?

No but I want it to run cooler if possible. Are you familiar with the whole concept of changing the thermostat?? Apparently, if you change the coolant it won't do much at all, but if you change the thermostat so that it cuts the fans on at a lower temperature than the stock fans cut on, obviously your engine will run cooler. I would like to do that, but I dont know what thermostat to get or where to get a good one (because I've heard there are trashy ones too).

Get one with some jiggle valves in it. I'm very familiar with changing the thermostat. Changing the coolant won't do much by itself, sure, but you don't want to go too cool because you'll sacrifice mileage without tuning for it and if you have cats, going too cool can damage those too.

Hmm...I hadn't heard that before. So, maybe one step cooler? Would that be okay and would it be worth it?

If you run too cool you won't burn all the gas you're tuned to and unburnt fuel isn't good for the cats. It won't make a HUGE difference in their life if you go for a few degrees cooler.

So what do you suggest if anything??

I'd stick with the stock thermostat and get some distilled water and Redline Water wetter. That should be plenty for you. The Engine Ice is great stuff, but unless it's easily avaible, it's overkill.

I will tell you, that since I switched to this coolant, my fans don't need to be on as long, so it does cool down a little more efficiently, but the distilled water with water wetter should be plenty for you. How cold are the winters?

Winters are not much colder than 32 degrees during the day usually.
