Getting Out Smoke Smell

What's the best way to get the smoke smell out of a car? I'm not talking a temporary fix, I'm wanting something a bit more permanent. Any ideas?

Apparently you don't smoke, nor know how much my MSP means to me and how clean I keep it.

Thanks, though.

Actually I do smoke. I even smoke in my 6s and it still smells new. I just smoke with the windows down and make sure to air it out afterwards..then I'll spray some Love Spell. :)

Try Febreeze, it works great. Neither my wife or I smoke, we went out for wings one night to a new place. It was a bar (great wings) but lots of smoke. The next morning the car absolutely stunk. I tried using Febreeze on the seats and carpets and the smell went away nad hasn't returned.

take this coming from a smoker...the best stuff to use is frebreeze and a product called ozium. you can get ozium at walmart and places like that. just clean the car really well with some good foam carpet cleaner inculding the seats, vacuum real well, laydown some frebreeze and turn the a/c on to recirc mode..spray some ozium down around the passenger's side foot well to get it into the heater box then shut the hvac system off and let it sit for 30mins or so...you should be good to go after that. i do it everytime i clean my car and 99% of the people who ride with me can't tell i smoke in the car, unless of course im having a cigarette in front of them. another tip is dont use the ash tray, thats the fasest way to get the smell really ingrained in the car. if you find that the above steps dont work the only other option is to steam clean the whole car.

I use Ozium as mentioned above. Most auto parts stores and places like Wal-Mart carry it. Tonight when you get out of your car, just spray some on your seats and headliner, you don't need too much, close up the car (windows up, doors closed) and leave over night. Tomorrow morning the smoke smell will be gone.

Dont put your cigarettes out in the ashtray, that will keep ALOT of the smoke smell out of the car. trust me, I detail cars on the side, and I tell people this all the time, as I did this for 3 month in my old car, and the smoked in smell went practically away. :D

let me tell you something from someone who used to detail cars, and does not smoke.

You can't get the smoke out. Smokers "think" they get it out, only because they can't smell it themselves, and we all know how good smokers can smell things. A non smoker can always tell, unless it's years later.

Rule # 1: NEVER smoke in your car. I've seen people at the dealer refuse top condition cars, for great prices, because someone smoked in it. Matter of fact, when I'm looking for a car for myself or someone else, if the ex owner was a smoker...I won't buy it. It takes waayyy too long to get it to the point where it actually smells somewhat fresh again. Smell is one thing, the other problem is that it stains the interior inside.

Not putting the buts in the ash tray is a good idea though, those things are the worse.

.....don't you know...smoking is not cool no more :)

All I can say I Ozium is the best damn odor reducer I have ever found. Long story short, I forgot about a bottle of chocolate milk that slid under my passenger seat (for several days). After baking in my car during a heat spell the bottle blew up spilling rotten milk under the seat. I got in the car and nearly threw up it was so horrid. The ONLY thing I found that killed the smell enough to drive it until I could clean it (the next day) was Ozium. Everything else just created a double layer smell in the car, i.e. perfume and s***, but Ozium actually killed the bulk of the smell.

Couldn't agree more myself. Not to mention if you have tinted windows, the ammonia from the smoke will break down the adhesive on the film and your windows will look gross. I too would never buy a car that was previously smoked in since the smell is so hard to kill. But a few smoker friends of mine keep their cars somewhat clean by not using the ash tray or the cigarette lighter. And yes, Ozium works wonders for all types of odors in the car.

i would never, ever buy a car where the previous owner was a smoker. my mom smokes and i see the damage she has done to here cars in short periods of time. not to mention it smells god-awful.

just dont smoke. i know its easy for me to say since i dont smoke, but just think of all the money you could save from not buying cigarettes........you could put it towards mods for your car :)

get one of those fans that are above your stovetop that suck out the smoke, and get one of those "rally" roof scoops and make it suck the smoke out. :D

Beautiful. (rofl)

Thanks for the help, I'll have to pick up some Ozium, lysol and fabric cleaner next time I'm up at Walmart.

is it true febreeze is bad for leather and vinyl? i dont know if its true butmy friend that details at a dealership told me it s horrible for it.. any truth to that?

Try all of these scented things, then after you've sprayed the s*** out of you car, it has a fabreeze, ozium, wutever smell covering the smoke smell. After this, do a high speed run down the highway, well, go the limit if you want, with the front and back windows down. This worked for me after my mom smoked in our car for years, i did this and almost, eliminated the entire smell, but just don't smoke in the car after this. And for the best result, do a long open window run after the fabreeze and s***. It gets as close to eliminating the smokers smell as you will get without replacing the interior. Works well for reselling the car aswell. Another thing you can do, is buy the new car smell. It comes in a bottle, much like a perfume or colonge. I don't know exactly where to get it, but I know High end car dealerships(BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Ferrari etc) use this when they resell a smokers car. It works the best with a steam cleaned car.

Not to get off topic here but is something that reminds me of something. My woman's family all smoke. So I'm constantly being pissed off about it. NO ONE DARES to smoke in my car.

Faqs for you smokers.

1. Smoking under the stove vent DOES NOT WORK! Your house and everyhting in it including clothes still smells like s***.

2. Opening a Window while driving and smoking. DOES NOT WORK. Wind blows smoke into the back seat.

3. Stick the Non smoker in the back seat, and open your front window while smoking for your non-smoker friend. DOES NOT WORK! Wind just blows the smoke in the back seat. DUH! How many smokers claim the smoke gets "sucked " out the windows.......bulls***!

4. Brushing your teeth does NOT get rid of the tase of smoke. Nor does mouth wash

5. Every non smoker hates it when you smoke while their eating or in the car with you. If they say they don't mind, their just being polite.

6. Smoking inside at your front door, with the door open, or next to a window...DOES NOT WORK! You house and everything in it still smell like s***.

7. Lets say you don't smoke in your house. But you smoke somewhere else, say in your car or whereever....guess what, you house still smells like s***. It gets on your clothes, and your own clothes make your house stink.

8. Dont smoke around your car with the windows down. You might as well just sit in it.

9. You guys can't smell anything, and you can't taste anything. the next time you eat something and wonder why no one likes it but you....it's because you can't really taste it. I find smokers generally like spicier foods then non-smokers....guess why? If a Non-smoker tells you they smell something....and you don't.....figure it out, their not crazy, it's you.

Rude? Sorry, just the truth that no one likes to tell people. My woman used to smoke, and I'm severly allergic to smoke. Thankfully she quit, but I seem to have always found friends that smoke over the years, but thankfully most people nowadays aren't smoking anymore.

i find the cleaners, sprays, scents (including the "new car scent")are just as offensive as the cigarette smoke. i used this BISSELL LITTLE GREEN vacuum cleaner last weekend, using just plain water (no little green additive), and it removed 99% of the scents.

http://www.bissell.com/Products/category.asp?Page_id=255&cookie_test=1

cost $99 (cdn) at walmart.

edit...so my suggestion is, use some of the relatively neutral smelling products suggested above to get rid of the cigarette smell (like fabreze or the bissel foam fabric and upholstery cleaner in the web link) and then use the bissell water spray vacuum cleaner if you don't like any of the residual scents. ( i loaned one of my cars to someone in the family for a few months and just spent the last 8 weeks trying to get the cigarette smell out of it.)
