Getting new rims, been doing my research, but would love some opinions!

It's been awhile since I've posted here, but now I've caught the tuning bug bad again, and now I actually have the $$$ to do something about it. :D

Anyway, my car is a completley stock 2003.5 MP5 (aside from a MSP Exhaust), and I want to get some new rims and tires.
I'm pretty sure I want to go with the Rota Attacks from AutoRnD.com (link ), 17x7.5, offset: 48, 5x100. From everything I've read, this should work fine, right?
I've been hearing different things about the tires though. Right now, I'm looking at the Falken ZiEx ZE 512s (215/45/17) from edgeracing.com for $73 per tire. Are those numbers right? Should the width be higher/lower? Any thoughts on this would be very helpful, but that looks like such a good deal, it's hard to pass up.

I'll just order my questions numerically to make it simpler for those nice enough to help out:

1) Should the wheel/tire fit ok without rubbing at 48mm offset?

2) I'm considering putting on some Eibach springs a few months from now. Would lowering the car cause a problem with this setup?

3) Since I'd be ordering from seperate sites, I'd need to take the rims/tires to a shop and have them put the tires on the rims. Does anyone know about how much this would be offhand? I plan to install them onto the car myself.

4) Does anybody know of anyone with a P5 that has the attacks installed? I've been looking, but it mostly seems to be the other Rota styles on here.

Any help, opinions, comments, and concerns would be MUCH appreciated! Thanks!

First Check tires.com much better site and they have a free shipping promotion right now and i just picked up those tires in 205/50/16 for 71 each.

Yes the tire will be perfect as you cannot go smaller then 215 on a 7.5inch rim and with a 48+ you wont rub!
2) I'm considering putting on some Eibach springs a few months from now. Would lowering the car cause a problem with this setup?
No problems! Perfect offset = perfect drop
3) Since I'd be ordering from seperate sites, I'd need to take the rims/tires to a shop and have them put the tires on the rims. Does anyone know about how much this would be offhand? I plan to install them onto the car myself.
Depending on the shop and since youll already have valve steams (from tires.com) sears should run you about 16 bucks and with them you get lifetime balance i believe. Certain place can go as cheap as 7 bucks and as high as 20.
4) Does anybody know of anyone with a P5 that has the attacks installed? I've been looking, but it mostly seems to be the other Rota styles on here.
Check the show off your rims thread and search that thread for attacks.

Sounds like you did everything right! Post pix of the hot new whip. PS get the Pro-Kit

You said that you are getting 5x100? Don't you need 5x114.

Hmm...well...5x114.3 is also an option.

I'm not sure which I need. Does anyone know between 100 and 114.3? I guess I should ask Rishie.

To SenorCorwin:
Thanks very much for the reply. Is edgeracing.com really not a good retailer? I've heard some people on these forums have bought from them, which is why I was interested. And as it turns out, even with the free shipping from tires.com, edgeracing's cheaper wheels and only $33 shipping for all 4 shipped actually makes them about $20 cheaper than tires.com.

P.S. oh, and whats the difference between the 215/40-17 and 215/45-17s? Is there any noticeable difference there guys?

Thanks again!

dude! you need the 5x114.3, 5x100 will not fit.

Sweet! Ok, thanks for that. 5x114.3 it is then. Glad I posted this.

As far as the tires go, what would the difference be between the 45s and the 40s? Which would you guys recommend?

Prefrence really, i think 40s look better so like more cushion. Ive never ordered from them and prefer major retail chains. Make sure you get valve steams and whatevers cheaper works Good luck!

Besides ride (a 45's always gonna ride a little nicer than a 40. I've got 204/40's which would be narrower than then 215/40's, and the ride fine), the only big difference is how much ur speedometer's gonna be off. Stock size is 195/50-16. The 215/40-17 is gonna be just a touch off (Speedo reads 60, u'll be doing 60.2). With the 215/45-17 it's gonna be off a bit more (reads 60, doing 62.5). That can make a difference if u think ur doing 10 over, but u may be doing 12+, if u know what I mean lol.

For more info (where I got it from lol) check this out: Tire Size Calculator

the 215/40/17 is the right size for the P5 or ES (that difference is w/in the speedo's margin of error). 215/45 is the MSP size and is a little tall (about an inch taller than stock), but not unworkable. keep in mind that the 45s will raise your car about 1/2"; the 40s will keep it the same height.

it will also hurt your acceleration more than the 40s, but the whole package is probably going to slow you down a little anyway since it's heavier.

and with the taller tires, your gearing's gonna be a little worse, too.

Thanks so much to everyone who has replied thus far.

About the tires, I guess I'll go with the 40s. I don't mind a little extra ride harshness, and would like my speedometer to stay accurate.
Also, about the 45s raising the car height...the 40s would keep it the same height, but the increased wheel and tire size would fill in the fender gap slightly?

Oh, and last question, which I'll probably just end up emailing to someone from AutoRnD, but I've heard vague references to the Rota Attacks having problems fitting the P5's hubs? That they need to be machined specifically for our car's hubs. Anyone heard this? Or had any problems?

Thanks again to everyone. Really looking forward to the new rims! :)

No, because even tho ur +1, ur gonna be at the same overall diameter (which is what keeps ur speedo accurate), so the gap is gonna be the same.

the increased wheel size will *appear* to fill the wheel wells more...but the gap will be the same. until you put on the springs.

Yeah, thats what I meant. I know it won't actually fill it, I guess I phrased that wrong. Just hoping to reduce that "fender gap" while waiting to put on lowering springs.
Thanks again guys. I'll post back if I have anymore questions.

I like wheels but you may want to shell out a little bit more money for some better tires. I have the ziex 512's on my talon and they're ok but I'd look into a set of neo gens or paradas. They have great tread designs. I have the neo gens on my enkeis AND they handle superbly.

Thanks for the info.

I haven't settled on the Ziex's yet, they're just a pretty good deal on a what looks to be a pretty good tire. I'm not going to be doing any racing or track runs or anything too stressful, and I'm sure ANY tire is going to be a quantum leap over the stock dunlops.
Still don't want to skimp though, so thanks again for the input.

Oh, and one last question:

What color would you guys go with for these rims on a yellow P5?

I'm thinking either:

Black
Hyper black
Gunmetal

What's the difference between black and hyper black?

^ Hmm, how do I describe this?
Black = Black
Gunmetal = gunmetal
Hyperblack = a cross between Black and gunmetal. From some angles i'll look like a dull silver, another angle will look like gunmetal, other angles will look darker and lighter.

I hope this described it well enough
