it sounds great though, no distorition or buzzing through the AUX input on the kenwood

how much is the total setup running you...everything to get a fully functional carputer...?

uhm...woo...hm...lets see
alright

LCD is 430 from dscustoms.com
motherboard is intel D810EMO that i got on ebay for 35
processor is a 1ghz Pentium III that i got for free from work
hard drive is a 10 gig that i had laying around
256mb of ram, also free from work
powersupply is a 150w for 120 IIRC
keyboard is a mini form factor keyboard from microcenter (a PC store) for 30
the kenwood aux adapter was 20
the motherboard has NO "legacy" ports, so i needed to buy an USB -> Serial adapter for the touchscreen. I went to microcenter and they didnt have anything i wanted, then i went to the returned item area and found one for 30 bux just cuz it was opened. USB -> 2 Serial, 1 Parallel and 2 more USB. the thing was suppposed to be 90. oh well, my win. :)
power inverter was 70 from sounddomain
..so total so far we are lookin at: $735
not too bad when most of the cost is in the LCD

i still need to buy a wireless NIC and GPS locator device
and wire up some circuits to control the startup and shutdown

Looks like a pain in the ass to set up! I admire you for doing it though, separating yourself from those who would never try it like me!:D And I thought I had problems with headlight dimming, I am sure a computer will take some juice from your electrical system won't it? Cool concept though!(thumb)

awesome. . .glad to see it coming along. . i can't wait till mine is "done" which is probably never but it's all good

you might wantto vent the glove box, your CPU is gonna cook with no fresh air.

good luck(thumb)

P4s will throttle back if they get hot, but I don't think that the P3s do, just remember, that it will increasingly get hotter and hotter if the air doesn't get circulated with the cab.

you cant cool a CPU with already warm air.

i know about the heat issue. if i DO put the computer in there (im not even sure all the s*** will fit like NIC and GPS) im going to be cutting holes in the back of the glovebox and throw a fan or 2 to move the hot air out.

but im going to run it in the glovebox just to test it out and see what my options are

What about under the seat? You will have a nice AC vent to cool it off. You can spend hours shopping online while driving!! LOL
I guess if you did that, then you would worry about people in the back kicking it with their feet. :p

what kinda pointing device are you gonna use? track-ball?

the LCD touchscreen (thumb)

and yes, after 20 minutes of driving, the computer locked up. there is a definite heat issue going on here. i will probably go back to my original plans of making an aluminum case and putting it under the seat.

and how can you burn out the CPU? if anything, the computer will lock up, and then you know to shut it down. ive never burnt a CPU (and ive overclocked my fair share of both intel and AMD cpus). the only way i can imagine is to incorrectly install the heatsink.

that thing is touchscreen.... kick ass! (2thumbs)

I have heard of people venting their AC into the glove box to cool down cans of pop. I have never tried it but it might work to cool the CPU as well.

Overclocked a PII-300 to 450, even had it watercooled. Ran fine for a few months, then one time it locked up. I reset, and got nothing. I brought it back down to 300, got nothing. Not even the video card BIOS info came up. Pretty much the same thing happened to my PIII-500. I switched to an AMD and never had any problems. Luckily, there's not really any more need to overclock, CPU's are fast enough now...and I even went back to Intel with my current P4.
