gettin some work done

i am putting on a new spoiler. the new one does not have a middle support post so the bolt hole will be welded up and sanded. my entire trunk deck inside and out will be repainted as well as i have several chips. the body shop wants 700 bucks for paint and labor. i have never had work like this done, so does this sound like a fair price?

thats pretty steep IMO for a weld and respray, but im not sure how much work goes into the welding and such.

i could be wrong.

cant you just use bondo and touch up paint? Im sure the whole deck lid doesnt need re-painted. Most people spend $700 to get their whole car re-painted.

actually... for welding/repainting that seems about right give or take $100..

welding/sanding + repainting is a decent amount of work. As long as the shop is reputable and does good work, $700 isnt horrible.

to give you an idea. I was going to have the holes in the front bumper filled (from front license plate which I dont ned) and the entire bumper repainted as well as the lip retaped. I came out to almost $600.

ouch, too bad you don't know anyone with a welding machine and and air compressor. you could buy a paint gun, paint, clearcoat and primer for way less then that.

might take you a try or two but you'd at least learn how to prep and paint. where in ohio are you?

I filed out the holes to rid any rust and then placed masking tape on the inside of the deck lid. Then put some JB weld in the holes, and finish off with touch up paint. Unless your new spoiler has a huge gap between it and the trunk you won't really notice the touch up. BTW, JB weld, 7 bucks, touch up paint from mazda dealer, 10. Then you've still got $683 to spend on upgrades.

the spoiler needs painting too. i do have several paint chunks on my deck and the underside looks horrible. how well does the touch up paint match up to stock color? i bought a small bottle while back from an online mazda dealer....used just a touch and didnt seem to match exactly. i would hate to touch up the spoiler bolt hole and it not match up rite. is there a touch up spray?

the new spoiler does not have a middle support like the stocker. so the touch up paint will be easily viewable

I used the touch up paint on a emerald mica pro and it looked fine in medium and lower light, but on bright days or at the right angle it stuck out. Not nearly as bad as a bright white scratch, but still very noticeable.

Do you have any colleges near you that teach auto body? I took the decklid on my taurus in and bought the supplies needed. They sprayed the bottom, then I installed it and they sprayed the top to color match. They did a pretty good job too. Not perfect, but it only cost me $150 for paint and shop supplies.
