I just revamped my sister's Gateway this weekend...hi-perf said:reason why i suggest a 2400+:
so is a 9800 pro 256mb a waste of electricity if all of his averageness is going to be playing at most solitare and minesweeper?
Gateway Mini Tower circa 1998
Pentium II 350
32MB Video Card (NVidia something)
256 MB RAM (up from 64)
6GB HD (replaced old one that was whining)
56X CDROM (replaced broken 32X)
Installed a fan (so HD and CDROM don't break again)
WinXP Pro SP2 (upgrade from Win98)
Office XP (upgrade from 97)
eTrust EZantivirus (I get it free from work)
It takes about a minute to boot. Programs don't come up immediately but MS Word and Outlook work fine and cruising the internet is just as fast as my 2GHz machine. The only thing that didn't work was the power management. It rebooted instead of shutting off and I couldn't get the BIOS upgrade to work. Installing patches and upgrades was a little slow with the AV software running but it was manageable.
I post this as proof that you do not need over 1GHz for email, web, and word processing. In most cases, if your computer fits the minimum requirements of WinXP you should toss Win98 (or ME) out the window and upgrade to XP SP2 before considering new hardware.
