gauges stopped working and CEL

on my way home tonight, just driving along, my gauges stopped working and the check engine light came on. All the dash lights still work but the dome light doesn't come on when the door is opened.

Anyone know of a possible cause? thanks

I spot checked all fuse under the dash (only one location correct?) and under the hood. all appear to be intact.

Assuming now that you are talking about your gauge cluster, have you ever removed it?? Maybe the harness disconnected itself from the cluster...I'm not exactly sure how they are set up, but I think there are two different harnesses. Maybe one controls them and the other is the lighting. It should only take a few minutes to remove the trim and pull it out...Anyone else have any ideas??

I have never taken the dash apart. The dash lights work but the gauges themselves don't work. That is, speedometer and tach sit at '0' and the fuel and temp sit as though the car was off and the lights on. The odometer doesn't display either.

Other then a very wierd ECu glitch or shorted wire I have no clue. Reset the computer by unplugging ht battery for a few minutes. I would also look for loose harnesses behind the dash if not willing to take the dash out.

Check the fuses again I rmember something similar happening to me although I won't say why :D

It sounds like something came disconnected. You still have a warranty right?? Take it to the dealer if you can't find it.

I did unplug the battery (-) for about 5-10 minutes. Still have the issue.

Everything works except the gauges from what I can tell. I pulled out all the fuses I thought mght be associated with the cluster. Does anyone know what fuse it might be?

I checked under the dash jiggled all the connects that I could find.

It could be the one thing that you wouldn't normally think of...did you make sure you jiggled correctly, lol. Now, what about this dome light of ours.....this stopped at the same time as the gauges? And if the check engine light came on then I would assume that it would have to be something wrong with the ECU. Try disconnecting the battery again and wait longer.

Sounds like the speedo sensor got disconnected. I assume your mileage isnt going up either. The CEL is from the sensor being disconnected and the mileage not increasing. I'd say go on a road trip and when you come back have Mazda fix it. ;)

normally when the door is opened, the dome light comes on but since the trouble it doesn't. (yes it's in the door position) I can however, manully turn the dome light on by switching the dome light to on.

The little red door indicator in the cluster does work.

Pain in the a$$ to have to take it to the dealer.

just have the dealer do it. if you touch it, theyre going to say it was your fault.
