NBC Nightly News just had a piece on the SMART car coming over to the US in like a year or two. Now, I personally think cramming yourself into a two seater sardine can is a bit extreme, but if it puts more people on the road getting 40+MPG Im all for it.

Actually the Smart is one of the safer cars on the road, Now try to put a weeks worth of groceries in it and you have a problem. Somewhere on youtube, there are videos of crash testing in the scenario you described and the smart car just seems to bounce off the SUV and stay far more intact than you would expect
