Actually the Smart is one of the safer cars on the road, Now try to put a weeks worth of groceries in it and you have a problem. Somewhere on youtube, there are videos of crash testing in the scenario you described and the smart car just seems to bounce off the SUV and stay far more intact than you would expect
check out this video a Smart car hitting a concrete wall at 70mph!!! the drivers door still opens after the crash!
