Well its my 3 thread in a few days.... so I hate to bug again. I drive almost exclusively on the highway and I'm getting roughly 26-27 mpg with the 5 speed auto and the 2.3. This just seems extremly low considering I'm stay around 65 and rarely above 70. Any ideas ?

Well, there's quite a few things to consider here.

* Are your tires properly inflated? I just started to run mine at 40 psi.
* Is the car running good? Any odd shaking or start ups. meaning - tuneup
* Are you carrying a bunch of stuff in your trunk? (added weight)
* Are you using cruise control?
* How many miles a day is your commute?
* You running A/C ?
* You driving with windows open?

- Well they are brand new tires, properly inflated ( got 215/60/17 since not many replacements for stock size)
- Running good from what I can tell only 26k on it, but like isaid in anothee post, that 5 speed auto just acts funky to me
- trunk empty except for a small tool box
- I use cruise about 35-40 % of the time when I can
- Commute is... gulp.... about 130 miles round trip everyday, 80 % hwy
- A/C was running most of the summer... im in Texas and so I'm sure TheMAN can vouch for why lol. But does it kill it that bad with the 3's horrible A/C performance ?
- Windows usually closed...cept on a cool evening

I am averaging 28-29 mpg. I run my tires a little firmer, just had kumho ecsta lx platinum tires put on, and still run regular oil and regular transmission fluid. I am planning on switching to all synthetic fluids, probably amsoil for both engine oil and tranny fluid. That should help mileage a bit. I also have the drop in K&N air filter. Have you checked to see if your air filter is clean?

filter is clean but i was thinking of just doing the drop in to see if it will help... 50 isnt a bad investment in the future at all to me. I run Mobil one and have for 11 years in my two cars... I trust nothing else haha. My dad had a 85 mazda 626 with over 500k on the same engine and a 87 accord with over 500k on the same engine as well...all with mobil 1 and midgrade gas...

Tire size is your problem. That tire size may only be ~2 in. wider in overall diameter, but that translates to ~6.5 inches more distance for it to roll in a single revolution, which will add up fast at 700-800 RPM. That means your speedometer reading with those tires is 8.32% too slow. So, when your speedometer is reading 60mph you are actually traveling 64.61mph. This also means you're ticking fewer miles onto the odometer for a given number of miles travelled. For example, I'm betting your trip is actually closer to 140 actual miles travelled (you can check this with Google Maps; it's certainly close enough for this purpose).

Fewer apparent miles travelled / gallons used = your lost mileage.

Try multiplying the miles travelled on your most recent fill-up by 1.0832 (to add 8.32% more miles) and then do the calculation using that number of miles. I'm willing to bet it'll be more like what you're expecting to get. In fact, just multiplying 27MPG by 1.0832 yields 29.25MPG, which is what I get on straight highway trips.

If you haven't had the tires more than 30 days, it's possible you can still get the shop to take them back and get a different set that's the right size if they offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. Otherwise, you'll just have to do the math differently when calculating your mileage.. And, BTW, less miles on the car means less miles on the car at resale/trade-in time, too.

If you can return them for a different set, check out TireRack (and Consumer Reports, if you have a subscription (at ~$20/yr. for access to the ratings on the web site it's totally worth it)) to help you decide which tires are best for your purposes. There are more out there now in 205/50R17 than there used to be.

(I got all my calculations from www.tiresizecalculator.info. I was looking for a different calculator that does more, but this one works well enough.)

well holy crap ! They never told me that at the store !.... does this put undo stress, weat and tear or cause any other problems with the vehicle ?

The most it would cause is a difference in ride and/or handling. Rubbing might be an issue, but probably not since those with lowered suspensions and tire/wheel combos having the same diameter/circumference as the factory set(s) often lower more than the extra inch you're getting and without rubbing issues.

Another effect is that you're ride height (the minimum distance to the ground from the lowest point on the chassis) is an inch higher (i.e. 6" instead of 5").

I found the other tire/wheel comparison calculator I was looking for..
www.wheelsmaster.com/rt_specs.jsp

Just plug in the factory wheel/tire specs (205/50R17; 17x6.5, 52mm offset) and the other tire specs.

So the 215/60-17 tires would fit on my 2008 Mazda 3 S Grand Touring?

Umm, noo.. not.. really. They might "fit", but it won't be a good fit. See posts #7 and #9 above.

215/50R17 would be a better fit if you want a wider selection of tires.
205/50R17 is the best fit for the factory rims.

<nods> Also, it's only 1.5% larger in circumference, so minimal effect on odometer/speedometer -- 60MPH readout, 60.9MPH actual.
