Gas Cap is stuck

So as the title says, the gas cap is stuck. I had a b**** of a time getting it off at the gas station, and when I went to put it back on, it will not go in right. I know this is not good for the car, and I need to get it taken care of, but I don't want to de-mod to go to the dealership.
Are there any quick tricks to try?

Mine was stuck yesterday too! I could not remove the cap whatsoever. Thankfully, I was near by a friend's house and still had 1/4 tank of gas. We tried to unscrew it and ended up breaking the gas cap right off, to realize the plug part was cross-threaded somehow. Dealership covered it under warranty and I went and got gas lol.

Common problem. It's either a bad gas cap, or in my case, a malformed filler neck that needed to be replaced. Time to start yanking those mods...

Welcome to my world. I was 40 miles from home, with 42 miles of gas in the tank, and I couldn't get the cap off for the life of me. I limped to the dealership on fumes with my mods on, and they gave me a revised replacement cap. Only option you have.

This happened to me too after 2 days of owning my car. My cap didn't come off when I was going to get gas. I was at the gas station for like 20 minutes looking like a fool because the cap didn't want to come off. It finally broke and the next day I went to the dealer and got a new one.

Revised gas cap? Have a part number by chance?

I really hope you're not removing your mods just to have them replace your gas cap under warranty. Don't worry about that, they have absolutely no grounds to stand on with mods and the gas cap.

I'll say this much, the gas cap does seem like it has to sorta "drop" in after a slight twist, then you can tighten it down. Not sure if this will help anyone or not.

I'll have to check the paperwork at home. The service writer at the dealership knew exactly what was wrong, and they stocked replacement caps because of how often it was happening. Might be a new filler neck, as well.

i highly doubt that if they saw your mods they would void your warranty especially if its a common problem with our cars they know that plus you know that goin we have these problems, thats how it is with toyota atleast im a tech for toyota

Hmm..now that you mention it, I did recall reading somewhere on here about a revised filler neck.

I never got the chance to take the car up to the dealer, just the broken gas cap in a grocery bag hehe. They wrote up the paperwork but I never bothered picking up the actual "receipt" part of the service write up. But I can always call and find out what part # gas cap they gave me.

*EDIT*

Well here's another thread with the same issue:

OMG, it's just a simple warranty claim. Here are the steps:

Go to dealership, tell them, get it fixed/replaced, get gas after.

No s***? I know the steps to getting warranty work done. I was merely wondered what other people's experiences have been with this, and if there was an easy fix.
I know that they can't deny the work due to my mods, but I would not want them to see or hear them for fear that they might deny future warranty work.

I think you should focus more on building a better consumer/dealer relationship, rather than worrying about removing all your mods everytime you visit the dealership. They're not your enemy, but they rightfully can refuse service towards your car if your mods were related to your issue. Your gas cap has nothing to do with a bypass valve or an intake, and those two mods are not going to cause any catastrophic failures on your car in the near future, so honestly, you're in good shape.

Yeah, no s***, it really is that simple. IF they're big enough assholes to deny you future warranty work then it's only a matter of time before they do so. Are you telling me you plan to remove ALL your mods each and every time you go in for service or warranty work? Every dealership is different, what someone else experiences probably doesn't even apply to you.

It's called erring on the side of caution. No, not every dealer is going to be a bunch of jerks about mods. But until and unless you get a feel for your dealer's attitude about mods, you're probably better off not showing up with too many mods installed unless you just don't give a crap about retaining your warranty.

If you find out that the dealer is cool about mods, then you can relax later. But if you don't bother to figure that out first, and you show up with a bunch of bolt-ons installed & it turns out the dealer's got a hard-on for denying warranty claims, you're screwed.

Then you'd be posting up after the fact about how "I should've removed the mods first- what was I thinking?"

It's this very conundrum that has me waiting until my factory warranty is over to think about an FMIC. I've got a Forge BPV & Cobb SRI, and that's it for now, aside from wheels & tires.

And I'm not advocating that everyone remove every mod for dealer visits- I'm willing to roll the dice to a certain extent, but I will put my stock airbox back in, since the SRI would stick out like a sore thumb during service.

To the OP- do what makes you feel comfortable, as far as mods during dealer visits. It's your warranty at risk, nobody else's.

Bill, I agree with you whole-heartedly. But I think we're talking specifically about this gas cap issue and removing mods. Not removing mods in general.

The dealer will not be able to tell your black Forge BPV from stock, but of course they will notice the intake. Ultimately, it's safer to remove mods, but for the gas cap issue? I wouldn't even bother.

Then again, i've got the MSCAI and MSCBE so i'm smooth like butter...jk jk.

And I agree with the FMIC. I'd totally get one but I think i'll wait it out..

Understood, Mike. I'm just thinking of my dealer- any time I go in there for anything, even to just buy a Mazdaspeed keychain or something, they seem to want to perform a "complimentary inspection." I know it's a sales tactic, but they'd look under the hood for the gas cap issue, guaranteed.

The dealer tried to look under my hood when they replaced my radio. I asked them what that had to do with anything and he went back to fixing the radio... I wonder sometimes.

it's a routine and courtesy to open the hood and inspect everything, making sure the fluids are topped off and everything is in place... it's not a foreign concept! they do this to make sure your car is not about to blow up/catch on fire!

99% of people who bring their car to a shop don't know how to work on a car, so they depend on people to look at things for them and god forbid, upsell them services if necessary... if you prefer them to neglect looking over things, and having whatever **** up after 10 miles down the road, would you be happy then?

so if you all pussies have a problem with the whatever-point inspection, call the waaambulance, STFU and buy a gas cap yourself and put it on yourself, then get on with life
