Full Transmission Replacement

But for OP and many 2016 CX-5 owners, we now have fear of that we may get stranded in the middle of nowhere during a long road trip as this problem seems having no warning signs.

You appear to be more fearful than anyone I know!

If you can't go on a road trip in a new car with well above reliability record without a fear of getting "stranded in the middle of nowhere", you probably shouldn't get out of bed in the morning. The CX-5 is about as reliable as they come.

No warning signs? Scary! (ughdance) .........(rlaugh)

My problem is with government subsidiaries of anything, Government choices of energy winners and losers.

In that case make sure you don't drive a vehicle fueled by petroleum. Because petroleum companies receive more subsidies than any other industry by a factor of 10 or more! Mostly in the form of tax incentives/deductions and credits for exploration. Then there are the sweetheart oil leases on public land. In Norway, oil revenue is distributed to it's citizens. In the U.S. oil revenue is funneled into the pockets of billionaires.

IMO, you can only complain about subsidies for clean electric vehicles when those subsidies exceed petroleum subsidies! Until then you are barking up the wrong tree.

This thread has gone way off base. Does the 2015/2016 CX-5 have a transmission problem. Is it 1%? 2%? (Normal for production vehicles). Or is it a defect somewhere that all owners will be wary of. That is my concern as I my CX-5 is on a boat heading to Los Angeles.

A prius?? You can afford/drive a new Vette, yet you settle for a prius? You cannot be some tree hugger since you drive a good ol V8, I'm assuming you have decent money to even buy one, why in the world would you buy a prius? Of all the cars out there, I don't get it.

I can understand the frustration though towards Mazda. But hey, that kind of stuff can happen to any car maker.

Because why not? I have often looked at them and thought *My god...my ammo budget could double...* but my CX-5 gets pretty decent mileage, and I will say, it's been nice to achieve it!

I've met 3 kinds of Prius owners.

-They drive a lot, and it makes sense and cents.
-They are tree-hugging idiots.
-They are eccentric/like "new" things/don't give a damn about the peanut gallery.

I don't believe it "has a problem", but if it does, there will be a voluntary solution, or a class action lawsuit, and you will be fine either way.

GM is a complete joke when it comes to warranty work. They fight you tooth and nail and blame the vehicle owner and attempt to void the warranty work.
It depends on who you are. I never had an issue. Then again, for whatever reason, I get along with CEO's and company presidents. I picked up the phone and dialed the Bowling Green plant manager when I had an issue with my Z06. It was handled. With my WS.6 before that, I was sold parts at dealer + 10% even though the car was almost a decade old. I know some people have a bone to pick with GM, and I won't argue against THEM, but I can say, GM has a fan right here. I have had good experiences.
The Z06 debacle was mind blowing. GM totally screwed up with the LS7 / Z06 Corvette engine design. The valve would drop into the engine and it would turn into a bomb. GM would blame the driver for over-revving, racing, aftermarket air intake, bad oil change, etc. It was GM's fault for a bad valvetrain design. GM made every attempt to NOT replace the engine under warranty. That's GM for you.
It was out of tolerance valve guides. The design itself was just fine. GM finally did own the problem. it is a black-eye for sure, though, I won't deny.
Show me one Mazda owner who had a trans failure and Mazda attempt to blame the driver? Maybe it will happen but so far Mazda owns up and replaces it. Plus Mazda is way smaller of a car company vs GM so Mazda takes a bigger financial hit than GM would but for a small car company Mazda steps up to the plate.

One thing to consider is that GM had the "bail out", and so who knows what pressure was put on dealerships by higher ups? I'm not excusing the valvetrain "blame game", just offering an explanation possible.

I've lived through this before with a 2002 Acura TL. There was a "voluntary solution" and a class action lawsuit. The transmission still failed due to a design defect. No matter how many time it was replaced.

1. Horrible looking
2. terrible driving machine

You can't be into cars like a vette, CX-5, and than a prius lol I can see situations where this car is valuable, but if you spend a lot of time in your car, I'd rather drive around with a smile than a few more cents in my pocket. And the OP can afford a Vette, I'm pretty sure gas money isn't an issue for him. Therefore the money issue is a non issue. So maybe it is an environmental thing. Otherwise, never would I ever drive such an ugly thing. They are reliable though! But so many other better looking hybrids at least that offer close to the performance of the Prius.

Without any statistical basis to back it up (other than industry reliability ratings), I can tell you from forum members experiences, there is far less than 1% defective transmissions. Way less than that. And Mazda has replaced every one on their dime.

All the evidence has pointed to a very reliable and robust transmission because the few that have failed are not those that had modified engines and driven hard on the track and they weren't the ones that have pulled trailers near the tow limit over big passes on summer days. Nope. The few we have heard about that had failed were just in normal, easy service when something went terribly wrong. And it is quite rare indeed when you consider the worldwide population of CX-5's.

Of course this doesn't stop a fear monger on one of the competitors payroll from trying to instill mortal fear into any potential buyer. Such is life. The robustness and reliability of the CX-5's transmission has been proven time and time again by those who have thrashed it hard. That doesn't mean there will be zero failures. No transmission in the history of the automobile can claim that!

You bet Seabright, and enjoy your new car. I know the anticipation you are feeling because I ordered mine from the factory as well!

You're gonna love it!

Wait a minute...you ordered from the factory? You could have saved $2K or so buying a CPO vehicle or "new old" stock off the lot...

Stopping to fill up a gas tank 2 sometimes 3 times a week sucks. Add in 10 degree weather and snow - even worse :)

True, I can understand that and I'm sure it is nice. I just couldn't do it lol But hey, that's what makes the world go around.

Why? What is the REAL objection to the Prius that you have? I wager it's not even YOUR objection, but rather, your concept of how others would perceive it.

That's easy, I already stated why. It's hideous looking, and just about the furthest thing from a drivers car. I enjoy driving. I enjoy cars. The prius is not the car for any of that. Now DBLXX has a vette in the garage, so maybeeeee as a second car. But I still wouldn't own that car. Ever. Not a bad car by any means. Just not for me at all. Gas mileage is a key thing in this day an age, but I gotta be happy in what I drive first and foremost. That's why I am extremely excited to see the direction Tesla goes.

I would compare that to the CX-5's being used to run SCCA events, but noone uses a CX-5, because it's not much of a driver's car, compared to the popular Prius at SCCA events... :P (Seriously, if you can find a CX-5 running SCCA, link it! I doubt it...)

Interestingly, the Prius pulls identical skidpad numbers to a CX-5, and performs Edmund's slalom at an almost identical 60-62mph speed....seems like if the Prius isn't a driver's car...the CX-5 isn't, either.

Which is the point I've been trying to make for some time with this crowd. I've owned "Driver's cars", and the CX-5 wallows like a pregnant yak and can't pull itself out of an apex to save its life, in comparison. Yes, for a cheap SUV it handles well. NOONE can dispute that. But it is FAR from a performance machine in any capacity.

You can post all the nonsense videos you want, but it doesn't change anything. The CX5 is unanimously loved and praised for its sporty handling by every reviewer I have read on the internet. Most of us here can and will comment the same opinion. The Prius, yeah try again. So again, why are you wasting your time? If the CX5 is so bad, why do you still have it? Trade it in and go get a Prius. You would then be in the Prius forums going off about the Prius and what you find distasteful. I think you're just a pessimistic person.
