Fuel Cut: FAQ....

No offense Star 80 but you are a dumbass. My car is verifiably faster at 13PSI even with the stock IC than it was at stock boost.
I would like a new SMIC but even without it the raise in pressure has had a very positive effect of my car's performance.
I don't understand why you are calling him a dumbass. I think the point he was trying to make was, to make the engine breathe better before upping the boost.

I definately would like to see what your rods look like running at 13psi constantly. I know because I have allready bent a rod in my motor.

star 80- 13.15 @ 105 w/ the stock pipes and intercooler........I guess I haven't gotten any performance gains yet....I can't wait!!
LOL, yes, but you did join the Boom Boom Zoom Zoom Club!!!

If you are hitting fuel cut now, you'll definatly need a FCD with an upgraded intercooler. I've got an Perrin SRI and Hiboost FMIC and occasionaly hit fuel cut at only 6psi.

hmm...i djusted my MBC AGAIN today, now im at 7.5 PSI...no fuel cut....YET....we will see though.

I have a custom 3" exhaust (crush bent aluminized) and a custom ghetto CAI (2.5" crush bent"). Car was flashed prior to the CAI but after the exhaust. No MBC. Car ran like a dream prior to the CAI with boost spikes to 7.5PSI and then 6.5 steady thereafter. After the CAI had a lot of problems with fuel cut and surging. Gas mileage dropped down to about 350 km/tank and the back of my car was even blacker than it had been before. The car was running stinking rich and whenever it went into open loop it would sputter and bog before hitting fuel cut. After scouring the forum I eventually eliminated the surging by tightening all my clamps until my hands were cramping. Still had fuel cut like mad. Couldn't get on the gas hard unless I only gently eased into it at which the point of getting on the gas was long gone. With the colder weather here in Ottawa, the fuel cut was getting worse. Installed the Joe P FCD last week.

Already, the gas mileage has improved. On my first tank since the install, the mileage has improved to over 400km with almost a quarter-tank remaining. Fuel cut has all but been eliminated. The old MSP is back baby! I have hit fuel cut on a few occasions (less than 4-5 times), but it is nothing as frequent as before (several times a day, when warm or cold, driven gently or hardcore). I have been thinking about ways to adjust the MAF to eliminate the last remaining bit, but now that can wait since the car is driveable. I plan to change the CAI to a SRI to slightly increase the temp of the air running into the engine (I know heresy, but I beleive that this will cause the MAF to be more friendly and eliminate the last little bit). The alternative is to upgrade to a higher flowing Mazda MAF (? larger displacement engine), say from a Mazda 6 or an RX8?

Thoughts?

you gotta find out the weak links somehow. lol

I planned on the engine blowing up sooner than it happened. I am still very impressed with it.

Be VERY careful with FCD's. I'm not sure if all of them work the same, but I only had my Joe P. on for about 5 minutes after I got detonation at stock boost. I believe it was clamping too early and not spitting enough fuel for the air flow at high rpms. Make sure that you test the voltage clamp setting and put it as high as possible without hitting cut.

weather has A LOT to do with fuel cut as well. generally if you are upping the boost...cold weather sux. at least my car doesn't like more boost and cooler weather. 50 degrees and below it runs like crap. above that and it runs great. i was running about 12 psi and it was about 55 outside and it ran great! that's also something to keep in mind. by the way 12 psi is crazy! (cool)

how would cold make it run bad? Mine runs mint in the cold (with a fcd that is)

right, more power with the same amount of boost, unless im missing something

As far as fuel cut goes, will you still hit it with Unichip is the EBC is set for 10-13psi? This just popped into my head.

Star80- I think that freeing up the exhaust is more important than an intercooler. Now I have both so I don't have to worry about this, but I think with an intake and catless, and fcd he will be fine at 8-9 psi. This is just my .02

I say better to be safe than sorry. Might as well do it right the first time and not risk it going boom. Some of us are way more qualified to tune to the limits of the car, while there are those out there that should just stick to bolt ons, myself included. I don't have the money to afford a blown engine.

Free up as much breathing room as you can (Intake, hardpipes, IC, and TB exhaust), then go ahead and turn up the boost. You'll get even bigger gains with more supporting mods. And while you're at it, pick up DSMconvert's AFC. It has a preset map for 8psi and 10psi so you can run it safely and smoothly, and it'll only cost around $300.

ya the cold air is killing me with fuel cut, i cant go wot at all or i hit f/c at 6 psi.... but all i need to do it tune more with my mpi....... 12 psi and freezing temps equal a tuning nightmare for me (i need a faster laptop...... ) as for boost spiking i hit 26.1 psi by mistake...... i didnt read how to set my ebc and ya my car got mad at me but is still running ok.... fmic , 3" catless exhaust and a bunch of other stuff for whoever cares...........

oh, hows the car comin? is she all done? id love to see her and see how she runs!

The car is done and is running super strong. I can't enjoy it to the fullest until I get a better clutch though... The stock clutch is already slipping (boom06)

We can get together soon, maybe when we install BLU's turbo back exhaust and you can see it.

well hell yea man, cant wait to see, hear and ride in her!!! glad you got things done ok. in the mean time....(drive) ....

on another note...this fuel cut and boost spike is aggrivating, should i just say the hell with it and remove the mbc all together or deal??? any help? (dunno)

Sounds like the car is not liking it.
