fuel and timing?

I was just wondering what engine management or piggybacks have worked to control the two? I did a search and the only thing I found was the haltech but I dont want to spend $1200 just to control that. theres gotta be something else by now. whats up with the greddy e manage?

greddy e manage dosent work, ecu learns it then cancels it out, thers mpi tuner that dose fule and timing , do a search on it

i have to pass emissions so got the MPI tuner and had Andy Wagner install it

after having the unit for a while i've been finding that you have to retune it often as something goes awry...either the computer ecu learns and changes the fuel delivered or the MPI unit forgets and pulls back some fuel

also a word of caution, even if you have the MPI unit you still need to install a voltage clamp so trick the ECU from seeing rich...the FM protege one works well...Paulmp3 can talk about the issues he had with the MPI unit w/o the voltage clamp (he'd get readings of 14 under boost!)

All I know is that a bunch of companies are working on solutions that should be released in the spring. I'm waiting until they come out before making my decision.

Well if the piggys wont work then I guess I will go with the standalone. What exactly is a standalone and what kind are there for msp? Doesnt it completly take over your ecu?

haltech works fine, and it can be wired so it works with the stock ecu so youre stock gauges work, among other things

guys.....spend some time in the Forced Induction Section....

The Haltech works...Turboge had it working extremely well... he was using the E6K.... full control over timing and fuel.... With the haltech you are cutting the lines that the ECU uses to CONTROL the injectors and ignition coils, everything else REMAINS intact.... all your gauges.... lights...etc all remain in STOCK ECU control.

The Haltech units will use a combination of coolant sensors, MAP sensor, air intake temperature to monitor the required factors when determining the required fuel and timing amounts.

I know better than anyone that our ECU is stupid. My engine blew after 4000 miles, and they tell me the car ran lean. I also hear that our car normally runs insanely rich. So I am thinking the car was all over the place that day, as far as it's air/fuel settings. My car stumbles and hesitates like crazy halfway through the powerband, also. For example, you are cruising in 2nd gear down an empty street, and then you accelerate (smoothly even) towards full throttle, that is when you notice it most. It feels like something is keeping the air and fuel from properly combusting, the car just doesn't want to go anywhere for a second. Not to mention, now that I have my Injen installed, I had a misfire or some crazy problem when I tried to get full throttle on the test drive after the install. It almost felt like fuel cut, but my boost is stock, how could that be? My next step is to get the Greddy Profec B Spec II (next week from my Greddy inside man). Then I should have the Greddy full exhaust in another few weeks. Once I have all of the air and boost control I need, I have to work on the timing and fuel settings. So please let me know if anyone is having any luck with the MPI/E-Manage, or other relatively inexpensive units. I can't see spending $1200 to fix the stupid ECU that factory can't figure out how to properly tune. I like the idea of the Haltech and other stand-alone units, I just can't spend that much money right now. Please let me know what people are working on. Thanks!

I drive a p5..i have the mpi piggy on..and it's worked very well..Nick was really helpful when installing the unit..also when i had questions tuning it...The unit has a data logger..so if you are having a problem..all you do is datalog..the problem..email nick..and he will adjust your settings..than you download the settings to your car!

He has had his unit on a mazdaspeed or 2 w/ great success...You should def give him a call..personally i can't justify spending over 1k for a stand alone..i do not plan on going Forged Internals..

Thanks for the advice, I am still not sure what to do about my ECU control. I am sick of the stumbling/hesitations/fuel cut/etc. However, I need the best and most cost effective solution. Not to mention, I need a safe one, that won't cause any damage to my engine. I just want the car to run better, smoother.
I will just have to wait and see what other people find out, I guess. Thanks!
