i am unsure what the mileage is it's in good working order and good to go ...the reason why i bought it was to use it for my break in period of my new motor...but some bills came up and it's gotta go

The only thing he can tell you without tearing the turbo apart, is if there's oil all over the turbo, and if there's shaft play.

If you want a guarantee, you need to buy a new one.

It does not matter because this is a learning tool for me because i am going to rebuild after measuring etc. I am going to order a kit a soon as it arrives. They are about 100 bucks. I have never done that but my son in law says its easy. he says that about alot of stuff though!
As soon as i go through this one i will pull my stock one and compare them.
Any suggestions etr. I am not doing this for power, i want to learn and see why this things start to smoke. I can guess but i want to see while still being able to drive.
If the housing is cracked. The mani warped, or the vanes bent thats one thing. But otherwise i think its a good deal for me.

Yeah, there's a whole website dedicated to selling turbo rebuilt kits, I forgot the name of it though... someone here or on MSF posted a link to it once... I hear that's where most be who do their own rebuilds buy their kits.... It's supposed to be pretty easy, like your SIL says, although I've never done it and I'd be worried about f'ing up something with such close tolerances...

Check out the smoking turbo threads for ideas/opinions/proof as to why our turbos smoke... I think the biggest consensus is that there's too much crankcase pressure, which doesn't allow the oil to drain out of the turbo - backing it up and causing it to leak past the seals....

$125 is definitely a good deal, especially if you plan on the rebuild!

I have a stock K04 sitting in a box, behind my dresser that I bought for $150 that only has about 10k miles on it - it's absolutely spotless... I was going to have it redone by PTP or PG, but then I found a great deal on an unused PG SST, so I bought that... Now I have two K04's sitting on the floor lol...

Just to let you know i have the ptp fix "pill" and i agree that it is one of two things and the pcv issue is the other one. But i really want to get to the bottom of this.
I am planning on going alittle bigger with some ball bearings down the road a piece. Like when another good deal shows up somewhere. But i am also looking for a junkyard motor to build up a little and learn some more. I have some feelers out there but have not come up with anything yet. I will shoot you a pm later maybe and you can help me get on track. Wow two K4s. Funny how s*** happens.

Me too on the pill, although I still smoke occasionally ...
