Front Bumper Removal.

Pop the hood. And on each side of the grille there are tabs that attach to the bumper. There should be 2(two), 10 mm screws holding it in place. Take those off and lift UP as there are pegs on the bumper that keep it from shifting forward and back. You don't want to crack these off. I did it in my old 02 Prote sedan and had to drill some holes in the bumber and put some screws up through to hold in place haha. Have funnn! :)

I removed the bumper for the first time yesterday. I found jacking the car up and removing the tires made it easier, slower but easier.
Anyone,
is it this easy to upgrade to a sport bumper? I have the Mazda 6 S w/o the sport trim. If this is all I need to do to install the sport grille than I'm doing it.

[1. Remove the grille first. Two screws on the outer corners and towards the middle you will see two black plastic clips (they are smooth). Use a slotted screwdriver to pull these out and then pull the clips out. Next pull up and away from you...and don't be scared to pull hard.]

I just tried that procedure on my 02 P5 and it doesn't work because there are two plastic fasteners attaching the grille to the radiator support, they near the end of the grille. The hole in the grille. These are not the two piece fasteners like the ones near the center. The holes are slotted so maybe the grille can be pulled off the fasteners after the bumper is removed.

I have a factory workshop manual and it doesn't mention removing the grille for bumper removal. Bumper removal is on page 09-10-5. Radiator grille removal removal is on page 09-16-2
1. Remove the front bumper.
2. Pull the radiator grille forward to disengage clips A and tabs B from the front.
3. Install in the reverse order of removal.

Step 2 is vague to me, the bumper is supposed to be off,
neither procedure tells you to remove the grille fasteners.

I don't need to remove my bumper or grille at present, I just tried the grille because it sounded so easy. I had to change a fog light about two years ago and did it with the bumper in place.

I have a photo but I don't know how to post photos on this forum.

You must be planning on hiding the ballasts. I plan on doing that once things warm up around here. Right now I have one ballast stuck on the inside of the PS fender and the DS is stuck to the fuse box.

Pop the hood and look at the top of the grill. On the far sides you'll find a phillips head screw. Remove these (x2)....next look in the middle of the grill (near the latch) and you will see two plastic pieces going back towards the engine bay. Use a flat head screwdrive to pop these out...now remove the clips (for lack of a better word).

Now for the fun part....pull up and away from you so the clips on the bottom of the grill will pop out. Don't be afraid to give it a good pull...it might seem like it is going to break, but it will be ok.

anybody got a fancy trick if one managed to strip one of the top screws (with the phillips head)?

Got the right one off with a little elbow grease, but the left one resisted and elbow grease shaved off the grooves :9

Use a drill-bit and drill a hole through it, then use an "out" to back it back out.

Just like you would do with any striped screw...

Its been a day or two since I removed my front bumper, if those are plastic, once you've drilled a hole through it, you might be able to use something else to jab down in there and back it out. If you don't know what to do, I guess you probably don't have a set of "outs." I don't think that is the technical name, but you should be able to buy a set at any auto-parts store, possibly any home improvement store too. Basically it is a tool you would screw into the hole you've drilled, then you can back the screw that was stripped "out."

As for the tabs right under the headlights, if you don't want to break them while lifting and pulling, insert a small watch flat head screwdriver while the bumber is still in place. Gently push the clear/white tab down with it. The bumper will come loose instantly. I can't believe this trick isn't explain in the manual. But anyways, you'll have other problem like the two top screws that are completly striped or stuck in rust! Have fun like I did.
