Fried Engine?

My wife has a 2003 MP5 with about 10,000 miles on it. This Saturday night while on the highway she heard a small clunk and the oil light came on. When the oil came on she pulled over immediately, several other lights came on, and she shut the car off. She called the Mazda roadside assistance and had it towed to the dealership where they are going take a look at it. She had the oil changed on Thursday and I'm guessing the knob (at the dealership) who did the work didn't tighten the oil drain plug properly.

I have a very limited knowledge about cars, so I'm curious about how fried people think this engine might be. If they are able to "fix" it, will we start seeing engine problems down the road that might not have otherwise happened if not for this? Any input people have would be appreciated.

If t wasn't run dry for too long it should be alright. Just be sure to listen for engine noise when you get it back. There was a guy that came in to Jiffy Lube with a protege a few years back with 50,000 miles and had never changed the oil. Car was nice and quiet and ran fine....

Same thing happened here. For mine they had to replace the engine. It seems that the screws holding the butterflies in the intake manifold came loose and were sucked into the engine. It was a 35 day venture getting the P5 fixed (It is STILL not fixed and returned because the NEW engine is running rough at low speeds). The delays were from part mix ups...

Oh, the clunk the first time was due to the screw hitting the cylinder and spark plug at the same time..

New Engine

The dealership called yesterday and confirmed that the oil plug had come out and that they are going to replace the engine. I wouldn't be suprised if someone lost their job over this one. Mazda takes no responsibility for something like this because it wasn't a manufacturer defect. The dealership is going to have to eat the cost.

Hopefully we don't run into the same problems you had.

Yikes! I can't fathom how incompetent someone must be to not be able to tighten a drain plug back on an oil pan.

Just thought of something... it may be a long shot, but I think you should try it anyway.

With only 10k miles, I think you should strongly push the dealer to give you top dollar value for the car and take it off your hands. Unless you'd settle for no other car in the world, you might be able to come out ahead on it.

They shouldn't just replace the engine -- they should do whatever it takes to make you happy because this incident is completely their fault!

Wow, a dealer accepting blame, and going out on their own to replace the engine! I am sure my local ****hole dealer would have just refilled the oil and said it was ready to go, then blame me if the engine blew later on.

Lex, you got a good dealer. Where are you, and what is the dealer? Sounds like someone's ass got fired for sure, but they honestly may just take it out of his pay. I have seen that before, elsewhere.
