For those having Transmission Issues with their CX-5

This happened to me on my 2013 cx5 Touring at 4,000 miles AND AGAIN TODAY AT 21,000 miles. I'm so flipping mad. I hate this stupid car.

The traction control and flat tire lights came on and it wouldn't switch gears. So I had to drive 20 mph. Then I pulled over, turned it off, and restarted it and it was like nothing happened. When it happened at 4k miles, the dealership kept it for 2 days and had to reset something and call corporate to figure out what to do.

I have 18 months left on my 45k mile lease. Of course it's only a 36k mile warranty. Can I get rid of it early without penalty?

I took it to the dealer today. They just called and said they scanned it and there was a steering wheel position sensor code. They called Mazda tech help and they told them to clear the code and test drive it. They test drove it for 18 miles and apparently it's fine now. I don't understand how that explains the car not shifting gears and accelerating past 20 mph. I'm on my way to pick it up.

Looks like you can count me in on this issue.
2013 CX-5 Touring Automatic at just over 17K miles (purchased March 2013).

Lucky for us we were only on a 3 lane street (Scottsdale Rd., Phoenix) not a highway. I felt a clunk through the gas pedal and the RMP's nosed dived to around 1500.

Snailed it over to the shoulder, put in Park, stepping on the gas would rev up to 2000 then drop to 1500 on it's own.

In Park, shut off, restarted, lots of pretty lights on the dash, RPM to 2000 then drop to 1500.

In Park, shut down, restarted again - RPM's were normal but no forward gears in Auto or auto-manual (could shift but wouldn't engage). Reverse worked fine. Check engine light only.

Shut down a 3rd time and restarted. Check engine on but RPM and transmission normal. Drove to dealer and dropped it off.

This was on a Sunday (11/10/2013). They gave me a loaner (2013 Mazda 6). Waiting to hear back...

Count me in too guys. Just experienced this over the weekend. Car in dealership now, they will need to replace my transmission valve.

Purchased in March/April 2013 - 2014 CX-5 GT with just over 10,000 km.

Symptoms are exactly what the previous post describe.

Just talking to Service, they are ordering a valve body. No ETA yet but they're putting us in a proper loaner tomorrow (11/12/2013) for the duration. Based on others, sounds like about a week.

If I get more info I'll post. Hoping maybe Mazda has a little more info on the issue by now.

Update 11/13/2013:

Spoke to Service yesterday, they still don't have an ETA on the arrival date of the part (valve body), but they were able to confirm it's not on backorder. They estimate 3 to 7 days.

This dealer had changed out the valve body on another transmission a few weeks earlier. The tech that did the work told the service guy I spoke with that the part is an "upgraded" part and not the same as the those used in the original build.

My 2013 CX5 Touring will give me the CEL, Low Tire Pressure and BSM Off lights but will still drive normal...I pull over still, check the tires and general overview of vehicle, don't see any issues. When i start the car back up, its like nothing ever happened.....weird because i'm not having the RPM or Speed reduction like everyone else

My 2 month old 2014 CX-5 GS has this problem this morning. Its miles meter only has 800 KM. This morning temp maybe -8 C. Suddenly lost power and heard a big "peng" noise, and then restarted, drove with no problems. Check Engine light, TPMS, and TCS lights as normal. Do I need call dealer to check? Only 2 months old car can I return it to Mazda dealer? I really regret why I made decision to buy this car.

Because of this one incident?!(confused)

Yes, you can return your car to Mazda dealer anytime you want.
They will happily take it in as a trade for some other vehicle that they sell, and give you several thousands less for your CX-5, which is obviously a complete an utter failure in your eyes.

I'm very glad my car hasn't had a single problem in the 10k miles I've driven mine so far.
It's been fantastic.

BC.

All you folks who has have transmission issues with the 2014....were they the sport or grand/touring?

Transmission issues are very rare on the CX-5 and I don't think it matter one hoot which model it is - all the automatics are the same excellent unit.

I would never follow advice from someone who was still "suffering" while under warranty. Obviously, either your car works normally or you are incompetent at enforcing the normal new car warranty.

I realize I'm a little late on the reply here, but the suffering is certainly not for lack of trying: http://www.cxfail.com/2013/10/another-mazda-service-department.html

Mazda (admittedly in the DC market) resolved every issue with my 2010 Mazda3 promptly under warranty. Since North America re-orged, the central Ohio Mazda dealers have left a bit to be desired (which is to blame? I can't say). I've taken my CX-5 in for service many times, they claim they can't reproduce the issue. They hooked up 2 data recorders (one that caused it to break down), which captured the issues, and they claim there was nothing abnormal. Mazda has consistently told me the problem is between the driver's seat and steering wheel, until it wasn't (e.g. my Remote Starter).

I'll take the blame for moving to a state where the lemon law responsibility/power is with the consumer and not the state, an issue that will be fixed next week. In the mean time, Ricart Mazda of Columbus will be picking my CX-5 up tomorrow to try and fix the mess they made last visit.

Given the published data, your statement is subjective. It's certainly not a common problem, but I wouldn't call it rare.

Not to say that they didn't screw up your tires air pressure. Why didn't you just properly fill them and reset it yourself? What am I missing here in that you let the light on and imply you are needing to back to a dealer because of it?

Just a functioning of timing and not knowing what I would run into. I've been home about 8 days in the past 2 months (I'm on a plane now, my second SAN->WAS->SAN->MCO->SAN->CMH junket in a month). That particular trip: I was home for 2 or 3 days, I was forced (by my attorney) to take the CX-5 in for service when I did not want to or have time, and sent to the dealer on the opposite side of town. To leave with a problem I didn't drop it off with, I was already on my way to Costco, I stopped and inspected all the times (no foreign objects or obvious flatness) and took it to the closest tire center (at that point Costco) in case a tire needed to be plugged or replaced. I purchased a tire and wheel warranty, so it doesn't have to go back to the dealer. Also, FWIW, air did not cause the TPMS light to turn off, so I suspect it's either a puncture I couldn't see/find, or an issue with one of the sensors when they rotated the tires. The dealer insisted I bring it back (where it happens to be again today) so they could "make it right".

I have no issue checking my own tire pressure and inflating my own tires, when I have a minute, and I didn't just pay the dealer $90 for an oil change that included rotation/inspection/inflation. Despite the expensive cab ride there, if it had happened while I was at the dealer, and they couldn't deal with it in 5 minutes, I would have left the CX-5 and rented a car from Enterprise.

I don't know if that's more or less clear, but that's the scoop.

Yeah man I hear you. You are definitely in a tough situation esp when it comes to the legalities of trying to take care of the problems the "right" away. The way you describe the shifting delay is definitely scary.

The shifting is why I've been such a pest. It's a safety concern, I won't let anyone but a dealer or myself drive it. On long car rides (over 200 miles), it shows up over and over. Less in around town, but it happens frequently, and it's not easy to reproduce. Why we went through 3 months of data recorder hell to try and get a picture, but the first one got wiped out and the second was only plugged in a few days because the cable kept falling out.

FWIW, I'm told Ricart Mazda in Columbus dropped the CX-5 at my house today, and the TPMS light is *still* on. I called the service manager, who assured me it was off, it came on around the corner from my house, and the porter dropped it off anyway. Stay classy Mazda, you've only had the car 3 days now, it went in without a TPMS malfunction to begin with, and it's come back twice with it on.

Why can't people check the air in their tyres and reset the tpms themselves?

Because the moral belief that another human being did that for you. I mean if you want to be a controlling sociopath then why even let someone make a car for you?

He/she dropped off a car to fix stuff. It came back with things not right. Do you need to post the obvious?

I have a 2013 Mazda cx5 manufactured on 2/12....I just had this problem occur...Mazda roadside picked up my car and took it to the dealership...currently waiting on my husband to get home so we can go there...I will not put my 1 yr old in the car again until they figure this out.... I was getting off the freeway and was doing 40ish when the car decelerated, my traction control and tpms lights came on. I LIMPED home and called the dealership. Said they never had a problem like this...I am taking the safecar.gov printouts with me in hopes that they will replace this valve.
