For all you who know about or have had gti 1.8t's

Alright my friend is getting a new used car and was searching around and he wanted a gti but was afraid of spending too much money to make it faster. So i told him about that he could chip it and get really great power gains out of it. He didn't believe me so I went to a local spot near me where there's always kids racing and raced a 1.8t that was only chipped. The thing beat me pretty bad. I did have 2 other people in the car and he was alone but I also had less than a quarter of gas left in the tank. Looked like he was probably running about mid 14's. Anyway the whole point to this is if anyone can tell me what this chip is or if there are more whats the best to go with and the price and what kinds of gains are expected from it. I know this is a protege forum but I have a msp and I've seen people talk about chiping those cars before and am trying to help my friend out.

I don't know much, but the company that I bought my DV from is pretty solid with 1.8 turbos...Check out Stratmosphere.com...They've got eveything from chips to exhust to seuspension and even brakes. There's other companies as well, this is just one that I've personally done business with.

--EDIT--

It's 595$ for the chip which, with the 180hp motor gets them to about 210whp according to their dynos. If it's the 150hp motor, the chip will only get you to about 180whp. Then the exhaust from there (which they have a sound clip of...it's petty nice sounding) is about 600-700$. Their stage 3 set-up for the 180hp bas motor is about 3500$ and comes with the kit specific turbo, pipes, seals, injectors, etc. So for about 4500$ a 180hp base GTI can go from 180whp to 230whp, and ~175 lb ft to ~260 lb ft. Not terrible, especially considering that it's totally on pump gas, and the boost probably isn't raised that much.

Cool I'll send him the site. Keep the info comming guys. Thanks servoeyes.

My buddy has one (2002 or 3 GTI 1.8T)...chipped, exhaust, and some sort of different valving for something or other (very small but adds a couple psi safely) I think he's in the 220+ whp range with those minor mods. he had the CAI on there and recently went back to stock, but with a shaved box (laugh) which apparently works just as well, if not better than the CAI.
Thing sounds great, and is a blast to drive.

If you go to any of the VW sho and go's (we went to englishtown NJ) you can usually get a really good deal for the chips. Not sure what the exhausts ran him, but nothing unheard of. I guess comparitively, he messes with boxters pretty badly (very funny, btw [no street racing involved]), and usually keeps close to the boxter S's. He's got a sick coilover set up from H&R I believe which is really nice. The stock tires on those things blow though...
I cant wait for him to throw some good 17's on with decent shoes.

Updated the above post with some more in depth info and thoughts...Glad I could help! :D

Great thanks again. Yeah if I liked the look of them I probably would have definately got one considering the tunning factor, but the overall package with the msp was just too good for me.

hehe...yeah...I've started to like VWs more and more, but I still think most VW drivers are complete jackasses! :D

VV0R57 DRIV4RS 3\/4R!!! :p

I had a passat 1.8t and the chips available were:
APR
Neuspeed
GIAC
All chips range in price with Neuspeed being the cheapest. All chips increase boost and I believe you can either get them chipped at .8 bar to 1 bar. Its the cheapest mod you can do for the VW and you will love it.

I have a lot of experience with the MK4 golfs and jetta's..

the best chip to get for the 1,8t or the tdi is from a company called upsolute...

it isbasically a flash .. and the dealer cannot tell that it is chipped...

but they net huge gains with the chips...

one thing that your friend should think about is buying a front mount....

the stock tdi and 1.8t intercoolers are crap and they get heat soak really quick...

I used tohave a 2001 golf tdi (2-door)...
i had a 3 inch straight pipe... intake and the upsoute chip...

just those mods doubled the output of my engine...

but the tdi is a little different than the 1.8t...

the tdi stock runs 18psi and with the chip it runs b/w 22-26psi...

upsolute can also tune for what mods you have ... and they have amazing customer service and support... which takes a company a long ways...

if you have more questions hit me up ill have an answer or i can direct you to a good source...
