Fog Light Cut Out

i noticed that the fog light insert is made of solid plastic and blocks out cold air from reaching the intake so has anyone cut out the bottom part of the fog light plastic on the driver side to allow for direct cold air to reach the cold air intake? i was thinking about doing it and applying a small strip of mesh chicken wire so that the intake would get direct air flow. i dont have to worry about water cause i have that injen water repellent fliter. what does everyone think of this?

I think it would improve airflow, but you're already getting pretty good airflow through the lower grille itself. I haven't seen any ill effects in the design. I'd be interested to see a before and after in terms of intake air temps though.

my last car had a similiar covering i had the same idea. but didnt really wanna have a hole or chicken wire in one foglight covering.

so what i ended up doing was finding a drill bit just smaller in diameter than the the spaces in the criss cross's (for lack of a better term) and drilled a hole (inbetween the "criss cross's") in each space on the entire surface.
once you put it back on the car and take a step back you cant even see it.

does it actually do anything. who knows? but what the hell right. that car was n/a and slow. it needed all the help it could get.

i did it. i cut out the "look alike" mesh and put mesh and a some fins for extra protection from water and such ill take a pic and post it later if you would like to see what it looks like. only downside i have seen to it is more frequent cleaning of the filter.

Are those house vents? I'd paint it black at least.

I like the cutout idea though. I may look into doing something similar if I run out of other projects this summer.

If you were gonna cut it all out, why not put some expanded metal with a similar design in place of it. Also, I'd cut out right below the fog light as well. It looks kinda rough...

What did you cut that out with? Are those screw holding that vent in?
can we at least get a wide angle pic in hopes that it is not as noticeable from a step back?

yea thats not good. i would of tried something that didnt involve visible screws. maybe some kind of glue or silicone or something to hold on the mesh and i would of cut all of the plastic mesh off to make it uniform to what you were doing...but as long as your happy with it

thats why i was sayin to drill holes in the diamond shapes. you'd never see it but up close.

and it wouldnt look all hacked up(doh)

yea good idea...its gonna take a lot of time but i might try that first...and if it looks like crap i could always cut the rest away and apply a thicker mesh look

Well I have a picture of how I did it on my car, I actually drilled out inbetween the diamond shapes in the cover and it looks very good, its really hard to notice, id post a picture of it but i just cant get it to upload!(pissed)

Look closely at what I did to my CX-7 with the stock fog light insert and some pvc piping to get air to the CAI. You can see that the passenger side on mine was left stock:

FYI, intake temps = ambient temp any time I'm moving now. No issues with water on filter or anything. Florida = monsoon weather at times and to date, I've had no issues...

Well What Kinda Drill Bit Did You Use...i Looked Under My Car The Other Day And Noticed There Isn't A Lot Of Cool Air Getting To My Cold Air Intake Because Of That Fog Light Cover...and Having Some Kinda Vent Would Allow Free Air To Pass Through To The Wheels. I Am Very Interested To See How It Looks...did You Do It To Both Sides Or Just The Air Intake Side?

it was just done to the intake side, unfortunately I cant get the picture to load or i would post it, pm your email and ill send it to you but the piece isnt on my car....and you could use a drilll bit to start a pilot hole and then use a jig saw or some type of saw on low speed to cut out the back of it, the back loks rough but you cant notice it at all and when its installed on the car you really have to be looking for it to see it
