Flange Nut Came Out of Trunklid...

So every time I lifted my trunk lid, there was a noise like some metal or a pen was dropping inside the lid itself.
I took it to the dealer and they just said "your trunk opening mechanism is noisy so we'll replace it when we get the part in"
I wasn't talking about the trunk lid mechanism noises - I was talking about a loose thing inside the trunk... Still can't decide if I'm going to let them do the work on that.

Eventually I noticed that the trim piece along the top edge of the glass just pops off with little effort. As soon as I got one side loose, this nut came out:

Anyone recognize what it might be? Obviously, a nut coming out of my car is troubling...

On the bright side - no more noise

Pull that panel off the rest of the way. You more than likely will find what it goes to. Is it the trim under the top brake light?

Yup - it's the one under the break light that you can access when the trunk is open
The edges pop off easy and let you peel it back a little bit, but I can't get it off more than that... Am I missing some attachment point or something?

I was trying to get a picture for you but my photobucket does not seem to want to upload today.
it just pops off. The sides are easy like you said. But the middle has two metal push pins that you just have to pop out. It will feel like you are going to brake it but it should just pop right off. You can pull back the side enough to see the clip then just pull out on it.
