Fitment problem with ASA JH8 wheels!

I'm posting only because the ASA JH8 wheels are sold and "recommended" for the MSP by Tire Rack and I'm sure peeps have bought a few sets because of it. I just bought a pre-owned set last week from Run for Cover, and they were an essentially unused set he bought from another forum member, who bought them from Tire Rack. Run for Cover told me that they didn't clear his upgraded front calipers. Well, they don't clear the stock calipers either, and they seem to rub exactly where his big brakes did...interesting coincidence. Either way, a word of warning to anyone wanting to run these wheels. I had to break out the Dremel and work the outermost part of the caliper bracket down .020-.030 to clear the wheels.

I just got it cleaned up this evening and I'll post some pics tomorrow. They do look pretty damn good on the Spicy.

You need wheel spacers in order to make them fit on the fronts.

Thanks for the heads-up, Perro! I actually did a search on here for those wheels and didn't find anything warning me about the problem, which is my reason for this thread.

I may still throw a thin spacer on there, but I don't like running spacers unless I absolutely have to. So far the clearancing I did has been enough.

I picked up a set of whels from my buddy who had them on his P5 and I thought the fitment would be cool, but I looked and saw like no room between the wheel and the caliper, WTF!

I sent off a e-mail to tire Rack and let them know that the wheels will not fit, without spacers and the MSP's calipers are significantly larger than standard Protege calipers.

I may have to go ahead and do the Dremel thing as well!

Dammit Perro! I want the only Spicy with these wheels!

I took some pics of it so you can see what you think, and another that shows just how close the caliper is to the wheel spokes. Yes, I know I'll have to repaint my calipers, lol.

Bump, attached pics are back in.

Those look great! (2thumbs) Word of warning ... any extended "spirited" braking and the calipers *may* expand enough to rub. I'd throw a spacer on ...

Thanks! They're really growing on me. I also get less rubbing with the 7.5's +50 offset than I did with the stock setup.

I'm going to clearance the caliper just a bit more, but this time with a die grinder so it shouldn't take nearly as long.

Once, the snow is gone from Ohio, I will show you how they look on mine, with the Eibach Sportlines, they do look good. We'll have to meet up, the next time I am in TN. My sister in law lives in Johnson City area.

Just finished my clearance work with a die grinder. Definitely the way to go. Yeah, PM me when you know you'll be coming down. I go up to Bristol every spring for the NHRA race.

by the way, i am the original owner of them. i never put them on my car ( titanium ) because i went with a different set. so yes, they were brand new, what the other guy did with them i have no idea. look good though (dunno)

Yeah, I figured these were yours. IIRC, I finally decided to get them but you had just sold them. It took a little work, but I'm really happy with the result. Not sure if I mentioned it yet, but the stock wheels/tires rubbed pretty badly on the inner fenders since the suspension drop, but now that's pretty much gone. I guess the slight change in offset worked to my advantage.
