turbo colts, looking for a p5
Hi guys and girls, im looking to buy an 03 p5 for my wife. I want to get a model with all the options that were available.
I understand there was an upgrade stereo option, but what exactly did that consist of? Just a cd changer? or was there a higher power amp and sub from factory? was there an mp3 player option? ( I dont want to swap in my spare car audio system, unless really necessary)

I want to leave the car as stock as possible. I have a tendancy with doing mods with all my vehicles.

I have driven an 02, and was impressed with the factory braking and handling, i'm very happy with the cargo space and definetely like the stock sporty look. I hate aftermarket body kits.

The car does need a turbo. I am just used to driving turbo cars or v6's.
I still own and abuse two Mitsubishi Mirage turbos.

What kind of gas mileage are these cars getting now, after being a couple of years old?

What kind of mods need to be done to bring the car into the mid-15's?(please dont mention turbo) and what mods for under $1500 to get it into the 15's.

If anyone in the Toronto Canada area is looking to sell their p5, let me know!!
Thanks for the space,
Charles

hey... i cant really answer ur questions about the power, but since u live in the same area i do, all i can tell u is that the cd player doesnt play mp3, u can get a cd chnager if u want.. add a casette or a mini disk.. nothing special, no amp upgrades or anything. gas milege isnt bad.. doesnt bother, thats alli can say.. btw, you can check out toprotege.com, its our toronto protege club, i think there might be a couple of people selling their p5s, not sure though.. and there's always autotrader.ca ;)

They get good gas milage (most above 25 mpg from what i read) my es ran a 16.7 bone stock. add i/h/e/throttle body spacers and u should be in the 15 w/o a problem

But then their is always turbo's for 13's ;)

anyway the p5 is a great car.handles well, has great cargo space and is extremly safe (we have had a few bad crashes w/o much injury at all)

2003 offered a spare-tire mounted subwoofer. I've heard it doesn't add that much to the system, but on the plus side it doesn't intrude on your truck space.

I usually pull 28-29 on 80% highway driving. AC doesn't seem to affect my mileage, either, which is nice come summer.

In regards to speed, I found that my quest for more hp was fairly short lived. After I had my p5 for a while, I found that though it is far from the fastest car out there, it makes up for it many other aspects. I've had the car for almost two years now, and it never ceases to put a smile on my face.

The upgraded stareo in the 2003 has tweets mounted in the triangles on the inside of the side-view mirrors as well as the cd changer in the glove-box and the sub enclosure inside the spare tire.

Gas mileage is good because power is lacking.

This is good to know about the stereo option, it doesnt have to hit 140+db like it does in my other cars. A 6pack cd would do me well, as i have hundreds of cd's anyways.

I do need something decent on fuel, I have also been looking into the 2007 suzuki swift , and the 2007 honda FIT, both fully loaded of course. I have yet to drive those in stick shift. But i dont want to spend $20K Canadian on a shoe box size car.
I have to weigh out my options. I like the looks of the protege right off the bat. It has aftermarket options as far as suspension and motors goes.

Now i shall look for an 03 with the sub in the spare, does anyone have a pic? and how is the sub powered?

OH, and roof racks, was that an option?

Had this been in 2003, i would have bought one new then, but at the time, my cars were all running fine.

Thanks for the replies guys.

actually the 6 disk is built into the H/U. not in the golve compartment. i have it and aside from needing to burn cds alot to get my own playlist i like it. i have no spare tire sub thats 03.5 but it does raise the cargo floor a few inches.

I wonder if what you guys are mentioning about the option holds true for us Canadian dwellers.

Ive gone to see a few 03's, and so far, none have the roof rack or the upgraded stereo.

i think the canadian ones were different..cause didnt the canadian ones come with black head light housings..and the us ones had chrome

Welcome!

To clear up a couple things...

The sub was ONLY offered in the US model - to my knowledge it was NEVER offered in Canada. As well, in Canada, the roof rake was always marketed as an accessory after the fact; in the US, the 2002-2003 model (iirc) came with a roof-rack standard (beautiful, as far as roof racks go, and no you cannot get this one in Canada AT ALL), whereas in 2003.5 is when the rack was dropped and the spare-tire sub introduced.
