First Oil change - Question

Hello everyone,

The 2 is my first new car, and I decided to do my first oil change rather early.

The car hit 1000 miles and I decided to change my oil and put on my CS Skid plate at the same time ( Nice Product )

I noticed though as I was changing the oil, as the factory fill was being drained. It smelled a lot like fuel. The most I've ever smelled from an oil change before.

Some part of me thought this is okay because well it was the break in oil, and well rings not being seated and such. Yadda Yadda

Has anyone else ever experienced this? ( I've never owned a car under 80k miles so I'm learning )

That's a typical smell coming from the synthetic oil that Mazda uses and also because it's the cars' first oil change. Also if your piston rings were so fried that you had gas mixing in with your oil the car probably wouldn't be running well and would be immediately noticeable.

Just make sure with your oil change to use 0w-20 or 5w-20 synthetic oil. The smell should go away with your next oil change.

Because you are in breaking in period it is normal to have more than normal blow by gases into the crankcase, thus it is normal to smell a little bit of gas.

How is your oil consumption?

Very unlikely you have any real issues, but if you are really concerned take a sample at your next oil change and send it off to a place like Blackstone Labs. $30 or so, and you get a full report on the condition of your oil including metals, fuel/antifreeze contamination, additive levels, etc etc.

If you look at my oil sample results you will see that I had 2% fuel dilution at my first sample. This is normal but it is important to change out the oil early. Once the rings seat properly your fuel dilution goes to zero. When the car gets older fuel dilution will appear again so reduced OCI'S will be better for your engine. So fuel smell is normal at first 1-3 oil changes.
