The autox gods conspired to ruin my day last Sunday, my first autox of the season. This was in my DSR (B Mod). First of all, my son forgets to register in time, so I have no codriver. Second, X class ran in first run group, and it's cold out. Third, and most important, I decide to use up some tires from early last season. On the first run, I knew the tires would be cold and I'd be slipping and sliding, but you know right off the line when the tires light up and you're hardly accelerating that it's going to be interesting. If you've ever driven a shifter kart on cold tires, you know the first lap on a cold day it feels like the steering wheel is disconnected - well, there I was. The course featured many slow sweepers, which is exactly what my car didn't want to do all day, since I never saw tire temps over 105. The new surface is not abrasive at all, so getting heat in a slick is difficult on a cold day. I ended up getting beat on raw time by a number of street cars, which never happens, and ended up next to last in X class. At least it was a good humility check.......
