First 2 tanks under 24 mpg; am I don't something wrong?

My first two tanks have averaged 22.5 and 23.5 mpg. That is with granny driving it, and a good portion (30-40%) on the highway. If were darting here and there, I wouldn't be disappointed in 23 mpg. But I keep seeing everyone getting better than EPA estimates, and doing everything I can think of to improve my mileage, and it remained low. If I drove it how I actually intend to; you know, normally, I fear for more like 20-21 mpg.

What am I doing wrong?

Are you calculating MPG manually (miles traveled / gallons)?

Don't panic, I didn't see real gains until just under 3000 miles, and they shot up again at just under 4000 miles.

Commute is about 50 miles round trip 3 days a week, and about 15 miles round trip 5 days a week. I usually get gas at Super America.

Give your engine some time to break in. I'm not seeing the promised mileage either, but in the last 2-3 months its dramatically improved. I put that down to break-in as I really haven't changed how or where I drive. I have about 7450 miles (12,000KM on mine. ) I mostly drive in the city. On the highway, especially if you keep it under 60mph (100km/h) the fuel economy is amazing.

Don't drive it like a nanny its not helping the engine, just drive it like you would normally.

+1 Absolutely. You don't need to baby the engine in this vehicle. Fuel economy got drastically better for me at around 1000-1100 miles. Engine break in is unique to the engine so everyone's is going to be a little different. This car is actually pretty amazing in its capability to hit the EPA numbers, though running the air conditioning all the time in the summer gives me about a 1 mpg hit. If I'm taking a trip through the mountains though it will take a hit, which should be expected.

Is yours 2.5L? AWD or FWD?
You said 30-40% of highway. For 70% city, or even highway in stop and go traffic, MPG is reduced.
Interestingly, driving consistently slow without much stopping, could still yield pretty good numbers. For me, climbing a mountain does not affect the economy much if we go back down. Out of town trips always improve my MPG by ~3 over regular commute. I am sure if I'll drive only city streets, it will go down but I haven't tried it.

Exactly how fast are you traveling when you're on the highway?
I've noticed a huge difference in mpg between 65 mph and 75 mph.

Plus, how bad are your head winds when you're on the highway?
Our trip to Kansas City from Denver had us driving directly into a pretty bad head wind the whole way there, and our fuel economy was 26.5 with the cruise locked in at 77 mph.
On the way back home, going up in altitude, the mpg increased to 29.5, again, with the cruise control locked in at 77 mph.
Just under 1800 miles total on the trip.

my commute to work in other cars has consistently been about 1mpg over city epa rating. its not city driving, more like suburban. long stretches of road in between lights, with some stop and go traffic.

my cx-5, at 3,000 miles, is no different. I get a hair under 25mpg on my 2.5 awd. I would love it if it jumped a couple mpg when it breaks in more.

Just drove from Wisconsin to California over the last two week put almost 5,000 miles on this baby which just broke the 12,000 mile mark in little over 5 months. Going at least 74 all the way with a lot of 80 and my average which includes going over the Rockies twice at full speed was exactly 26.8 mpg.

Just filled up for the first time this past weekend. 27.5 (manual calc), which was surprising considering we're talking the first tank and a green engine. I'm wondering if the dealer filled the tank completely (although the gauge read full). That was my wife driving the car back and forth to work, a lot of stop and go and local errands. No highway. I took the car on a 200 mile jaunt on Monday, mostly highway but some stop-and-go, so am interested to see how this tank works out. Very happy.

Ok, just did second fill-up, 26.4 mpg (manual calc). This was about half highway (although about 1/3 of that was stop-and-go or heavy traffic) and 1/2 'around town' / commuting for my wife. About 3/4 of a tank (took 12.6 gallons). VERY pleased with this. Embarking on a trip to Cape Cod (leaving at 4:00 am tomorrow morning) so should get a good view of an all-highway mpg. With only about 600 miles on the car, I'd expect this to improve a little as the engine loosens up.

2014 CX-5 GT AWD (Canadian) milage.

I live in Canada and they promised something like 900 to 1000 km's to the tank of gas. Sadly nowhere near that! I took an 8.5 hour trip to Zanesville Ohio when I had about 3000km on the vehicle and that was straight driving with maybe 3 stops. Very little traffic and kept the speed at about 100km. I managed to get about 700km out of it before having to fill it up from pretty much "push-it-soon" empty. Otherwise my regular amount is about 550km to a tank. I drive about 50% highway as well. I have a 2014 GT AWD with tech package. I also have had my first oil change at 8000km and so far (3 tanks later) not much better.
Very dissappointed with this. My CX-7 (2012) GS was getting me about 500 km to the tank. And that was almost 600 pounds heavier!
