I fear that with 240 HP and AWD may be outdoing themselves, and for the following reasons I believe, and somewhat hope (I don't know why I hope, maybe because I believe it's in the best interest for Mazda) that we don't get the MPS as our Mazdaspeed.
-You can't have a more powerful, AWD car for less than your sports car that makes less HP (RX-8.)
-Mazda's demographic isn't as diehard as Subaru/Mitsubishi. We may like to mod, but most of us aren't blowing our budgets on cars to the point where we hold down three jobs and live in our cars. If any Mazdaspeed, particularly the 3 being based on a smaller car and not as popular as the 6 with the older, financially-cushioned, exceeds a certain price it enters the niche market where it's loved by many but considereda viable option by few.
-Mazda's cars have always been about driving dynamics. Horsepower definitely isn't the only thing to driving dynamics. To have a great car they need a perfect balance of power, handling, comfort and luxury (you know, having a radio, unlike the STi.) It's been said, "Driving an underpowered car hard is much more fun than driving a powerful car easy, as most everyday traffic requires." As with the price, making the MS3 a hardcore racer will take the daily fun/livability out of it.
As for myself, I'd be absolutely delighted if we could have a 200HP rotary powered front-wheel drive (or AWD is cool too) MS3. And as always, I want it in a 3-door hatch.
