AGR

the car you see pictured here is the fastest car 'ever'. Period. The end! How fast? 763.035mph

Horsepower: 100,000 (uh huh!)

Thrust SSC (Super Sonic Car)

The first ever supersonic World Land Speed Record of 763.035mph was set on 15th October 1997 by Andy Green in ThrustSSC, on the Black Rock Desert, Nevada. The speed of sound was exceeded on land by Andy Green and ThrustSSC for the first time in history on 13th October 1997.

(What you see here is the SSC breaking the sound barrier - notice the shock wave on the desert floor)

Will that record ever be broken? Hopefully!! Craig Breedlove and his "Spirit of America" has the best shot.

Craig Breedlove was the first man that exceeded: 400mph (original Spirit of America), 500mph, and 600mph (Spirit of America Sonic 1 - 1965). He thinks the 'Spirit of America' can break 800mph. He is still gathering money for his next attempt. In 1997, he was camped out with his team along with Richard Nobel's SSC team, as they were going to do battle at the Black Rock desert. As we all know now; the battle was won by the Thrust SSC. Breedlove's team experienced different problems with the car. At one point the engine injested a small rock, and had to return to California for repairs.

Like Craig Breedlove; I also want the Ultimate Land Speed Record Title returning to the United States. :D

i can take it in the twisty Y0!.

thats cool i hope we can bring it back to the use. i wonder what kind of tires they use. and how they stop it.

insert music here -
"Bring back that loving feeling, woao, that loving feeling. Bring back that loving feeling cause its gone, gone, gone . . ."
I miss you avatars and your sigs with the racey, piss people off pics, bring them back, let the others whine!

We now bring you back to your regularly scheduled thread . . .

Wow, AGR, that is pretty damn cool. Thanks for the post, very interesting! Funny how the fastest cars look like planes though. I can tell you one thing, I don't think I could handle 760+ mph, I think i would FREAK! :D

the car's wheels are made out of aluminum. there isnt a tire on the market that can handle super-sonic speeds without shredding

and the car uses parachutes and plenty of open space to stop...no brakes

Plus two F4 Phantom engines don't hurt. :D

Actually, no. The SSC uses Rolls Royce Jet Engines. It will never run again, however. After the final run in 1997. It was placed in a museum in England. Richard Noble figured, he made his point.

Craig Breedlove's Spirit of America uses a single J79 GE Jet Engine. And; actually, the tires on the 'Spirit' are Goodyear filament-wound carbon/glass composite material with rubberized epoxy matrix. The wheels are Center Line/Alcoa aluminum billet hub, special alloy spun disk heat treated, steel fastened.

The Rolls Royce 202s are F4 Phantoms engines, and that was what they mention running on a recent TV special on "Fastest machines".
But yes technically guess you could say they aren't since they supposedly used the hybrid version for actual record testing. However it is still essentially the F4s engine design.

btw you should watch the video of it breaking the record, swear a guy from the team had to jump about 10 feet in the air when the boom hit. :D

Interesting. I just found this. The F4 had two General Electric J79 engines with 17,000 lbs each while using afterburners, with a combined total thrust of 34,000 lbs.

Did they use both the Rolls Royce Spey engines, and the GE J79?

I know Craig Breedlove has always used the GE J79 on all three of his "Spirit of America" cars. Probably different variations. The latest 'Spirit' actually runs on Shell Unleaded pump gasoline.

Your looking at the American version of the F4 Phantom not the British variants which were used in the plane. There were many many variants of the Phantom including the replacing of the GE engines with Rolls Royce for the British.
The variant they most likey got the engines from was a F-4K of the British Royal Navy. This was a redesign of the US F-4J Navy/Marine fighter where the K model include the Spey engines and other British equipment.

Excellent Info., RE!! Thanks for the clarification.

Ha! That's right Newf! LSR cars are defintely 'Point & Shoot' cars! (lol)

can u imagine how that must feel though.....holy s***. How do even react to something in the way....I guess you don't. Imagine, a litte critter walks across in front of him, he can't turn anyway so wham! dead.

Oh, and I bet that don't have AWD! :)

I wonder what the BOV sounds like
