Falken Ziex512

I can get a really good deal on some Falken Ziex512, and from what I've read in other posts they are a pretty good tire. I like spirited driving, but hardly ever 'push' my Protege5 to its limits. I need a performance all season tire, and have narrowed my choices to either the Falkens or Toyo Proxy 4s. What do you guys think about the two? How do they compare to each other?

Also, has anyone ordered off of 1010tires.com? What kind of buying experience have you had?

toyo proxes 4 are very overrated imo, i have them and they offer no grip in wet or dry, the falken are a much better choice

I have a set of these for the 15" rim. They only have like 3k miles on them. lemme know if you're interested.

hey,

I've got the falkens on my P5 215/40R17, very smooth ride, no vibrations and I take Freeway Corners and on/offramps at like 160km/h if possible. Kickass warranty for those who need it. I work at kal tire and I have installed the falkens on at least 20 cars since i've been there. 3 of my friends cars as well, all of us have nothing bad to say about them

Matt

I agree about the proxes 4's. They are terrible in the wet. The pirellis i had before were far superior to the proxes 4's

I have the Falken ziex512's. 215/45/17. Yeah they are very quiet and I like the grip characteristics. They tread water very descent. My Khumo 711's still had the best water treading but the 512's have better wet pavement traction just not super standing water traciton but still in a good range though. The dry traction is awesome. I have pushed them to the limit several times and have lived to tell about it. Earlier I said that they do not break away suddenly and this is true. I have pushed them into a controlled 4 wheel drift around corners a few times and feedback and control was still there. They are good bang for buck tire. Edgeracing.com has some good deals on all Falkens and Toyos. And there shipping is lightning fast. Edit: oops I have st115's I got confused. Sorry. Still a Falken tire though. Ha ha ha ha Lol

I have a set of the 512's on my awd talon and they grip very nice, low road noise and they are a all season rated tire.

I got the Falken ZX 512's for my MSP last october because the OEM Potenza's were wearing real bad and I wanted an all season that could get me around in the snow, plus provide great handling characteristics because that's the protege's strength. I go to school in NH and I had a chance to test 'em out a couple times in the white stuff and let me tell you these tires will get you around even with about 3 inches of snow on the road. Obviously they're not going to be as good as snow tires, but for performance tires they hold up very well in the winter. Their performance on wet roads is incredible. Right after I got these tires put on we had 11 inches of rain in a couple days up here and I had to drive to a wedding in it. These tires never hydro'd and stuck to the road like glue. They are also very grippy on regular road conditions. The only thing i noticed was that they give up just a little bit of handling capabilities to the OEM potenzas in the twisties...(but not very noticable at all). For the price you absolutely cannot beat this tire if you're not looking to get two sets of tires (one for the summer and one for the winter). I got mine for 86 bucks a piece with free shipping from tires.com. I haven't had any problems thus far and will be a repeat buyer in the future. Good luck!!! Oh they also have a rim protector lip!!!!

the ziex is a good tire. Really predictable and good wet traction. That rim guard lip thing's saved me a couple of times already...

We've got them on both Proteges. We're very happy with them. I did get a bubble on the sidewall of one, but that happened when I hit a large-ish chunk of wood, so I can't blame the tire.

Overall, great tires.

I just replaced all 4 tires with the Ziex 205/50/16. So far they are working really well for me. The only thing I have noticed is that since there is a tad more weight and mass in all four corners, brake feel has let up a bit.

I had the Proxes 4's and now the 512's. Don't listen to JCell, the 4's have great wet and dry traction- not sure what planet he's from! It's likely he is just anti-Toyo. But in your case, it sounds like you should get the Falkens since they perform almost at the level of the 4's yet offer much better traction in any snow/ice conditions. They're a great all season tire for a really good price. The 512's also have a stiffer sidewall that the Proxes so you can run at factory psi.

I got the 512s in 205/40/17s and love them. As stated before, great wet handling and I never lose confidence in them in the dry. Not sure about longevity though. Put them on in June last year and then were taken off in Nov/Dec for the winters. Putting them back on in April, I noticed that it doesn't look like they will make it much longer than the end of this summer. I am looking at the 451s as my next set of tires, as these Falkens have impressed me.

Falken Ziex supporter right here. Straight line, toyo's are good, cornering, they suck.

Go with falken and you won't be dissapointed.

Bringing this thread back to life after over a month...

Looking at getting some Falken Ziex ZE-512's myself.

For the stock P5 rims (6" wide I think), which size: 205/45/16 or 205/50/16?

And for 17x7 (+50mm offset), which size: 205/45/17 or 215/40/17?

These would not be used for racing just spirited daily driving. Interested in good grip, good sidewall strength (I hate too much sidewall stretch), low noise, and ride comfort. I know the Ziex line in general is quiet and has good treadwear but the size is what determines general comfort and amount of sidewall stretch.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps!!!

Ziex 512s are perfect for the P5... I had them on mine.. and my MSP... and my Miata... and my MR2 for that matter. They'll go on the wife's Saab when she needs new rubber as well. Needless to say I like them.

www.edgeracing.com usually has the best price on them shipped. Until NTB got bought by Tire Kingdom I was able to get them to price match the shipped price... I'm not sure if Tire kingdom does or not.

Any of those sizes should be fine. I have 215/40/17 on my 17x7's with +42. I'm pretty sure you can do the 45's with the higher offset.

It seems like most people prefer the 205/50/16 for stock rims.
