Factory Turbo setups

I've always wondered how do all the recent factory turbo systems stack up against each other (durability, performance potential, technology, design, ingenuity, etc)? You have the...

Mazdaspeed

Subaru WRX

RX7

Nissan 300zx TT

VW 1.8t

Mitsu 4G6

Volvo turbo 5 cyl

Saab turbo

Supra TT

Buick turbo 6

GM turbo 6 (syclone/typhoon)

Mr2

Audi twin turbo

Neon/PT crzer turbo 4

Renault R5 turbo

Rolls/Bentley?

Turning into quite a list...well commentary on all, any or some is welcomed. Let me know if I missed anything...What do you think is the best overall package...all opinions welcomed...and please lets not turn this into an attack forum...thanks.

Well, for me of course the Supra would be #1 as far as durability and potential goes. Not many cars for withstand 500whp on stock internals.

#2 would go to the Fairlady......aka 300Z. A very good car with great potential. They're biggest problem is that they aren't do-it-yourself cars. Everything is neatly packed into the engine bay.

#3 Tie between the 4G6 and Rx7. Both are awesome from the factory. But both are known for having problems once modding is done. The Rx7 being the obvious one. The whole engine can be thrown out of wack if you don't know what you're doing. The 4G6 which I'm assuming is the eclipse is good, but the 96-99 or 3rd gen is known to have crank-walk once you surpass the 300whp mark.

supra's stock internals can actually withstand 800rwhp no problem...and i have the proof :D

as for the 300zx...the vg is a good motor, but their tranny sucked!

the 4g63 is a very potent motor...can easily put u in the 12s with a few cheap mods....

mazda rx7 is a great all around car (esp the corners)

s4's are very easy to modify and extract power...chip, diverter valves, downpipe and exhaust = high 12s...

gm's turbo 6 (3.8 & 4.3) kicks ass period.

audi's 1.8T's are also fun...quattro wouldnt be my choice due to weight issues...and awd and fwd still have the understeer problem.

3sgte (mr2 turb) is one of the best motors to build upon...variety of aftermarket parts avail.

that's my $0.02

You've missed one important Turbo car. The 323 GTR. The BPT that was found in only these models is one of the best 4 cylinder turbo eninges ever made. Also the FE3 engine which is used in many rally cars and is a direct swap for the Probe/MX-6/626 turbos and you can pull 500 hp easily from a FE3 with no reliability problems and they are very durable. From your list though the Supra would be the most resiliant the 2JZ engine is one of the best out there and are easy to work on. Besides that I would have to go with teh T-type Buicks the grand national was one bad car that I have not seen many cars beat. As for their reliability they were pretty much rock solid if you knew what you were doing.

I gotta go with the Grand National

The Grand National, for it's day, was probably the best factory turboed car built. The year it came out, it smoked the Corvett in the 1/4 mile. All with a 3.8 V6. I think,...I may be wrong about the motor size. That was one bad ass car. They used liquid/air intercoolers right?

Nope the GN used a Air/Air intercooler I ahve one right here wanna buy it 80 bucks lol

the cyclone/typhoon how much hp do they have stock and how is there reliability. my dad is a big fan of the 4.3v6 hes had a few trucks and vans with that engine and he loved them. especialy the s-10 4.3. i was just curious cause that is a bad ass truck. is it awd?? i think i heard that before but i could be wrong.

bad ass trucks! 280hp, 360lbs/ft. turbo awd. typhoon (suv) weighted 200lbs more than the syclone (truck). therefore the syclone was faster. 0-60 the syclone is sub 5...as for the typhoon, it did about mid 5. 1/4 the syclone was mid 13s while typhoon ran low 14s.

The 4.3 is a very good motor. I had an S-10 with the 4.3. Those trucks would haul ass. It's a very efficient motor. Just like Dodge's old 318. That was a very powerfull engine too.

my dad just got a new silverado with the 5.3l v8 that is also a powerful motor. 285hp. its almost as fast as my mp3 maybe faster.

I'm assuming we're discussing cars that are available to us in the US. And we're also forgetting another car. The Subaru WRX. As we all know, the EJ20 is a very capable and very reliable motor. Sure GNX and T-Type were great cars, but just like most domestics, they're weren't too good in the twisties. I think the GNX and T-Type are awesome, but they're a bit out dated. ;)

Apex...yup the WRX...its up now and yes US CARS! Anyone remember that Pontiac Firebird with the buick turbo 6...late eighties?

Oh and don't forget about the Chevy Sprint Turbo/Pontiac Firefly Turbo(Canada only I think...)......using a 1.0 liter 3 cylinder MONSTER engine too!

Chevy Sprint Turbo...I've heard about that car...Hmmm...does it have potential? 3 cyl turbo?...or is it a total piece of crap?

how about the mercedes SLK32/C32 349hp supercharged 3.2v6 thats a pretty nice gain compared to the stock 3.2 puttin out aprox. 215hp.
