Factory Radio Preset defect problems

Well, I am not sure is anyone else has had or heard of a problem with the Radio presets and lack of sound output but I am having this problem so I thought I would bring up the subject in case someone else runs into it later.

The problem description is a little strange but I will attempt to describe it anyway....

The problem is that the 3 of the 6 radio presets do not make any sound when the button is pressed. It does not matter if I am on FM1, FM2 or AM.

The radio will change to the station and display normally but it is like the sound is muted, no audio at all.

The weird part is that if you then use the tuner to search to the next frequency higher (104.1 to 104.3 and back to 104.1 for example) and then search back to the station, it will then play normally. If you search to the next lower frequency and back, (104.1 to 103.9 and back to 104.1 for example) it will still not play. Not until the sequence above is performed again.

The same effect is seen when the steering wheel controls are used.

My problem started a few weeks after I picked up the car, it was intermittent at first but has since become a continuous problem. For the first few weeks turning off the key for 30 seconds or so would return the behavior to normal.

To cut to the chase, I scanned for codes, found none, took the car back to the dealer, they looked it up by the VIN number and said there were no recalls on the car. They checked out the car and ended up ordering me a replacement radio.

I will be taking it back next week for the replacement.

Anyone else have an experience with the Radio acting up? (other than the cold weather recall that is known about)

I cycle through my radio presets all the time, albeit using the buttons on the steering wheel. No issues thus far.

hmmm let me take a crack at this, cuz the issue doesnt seem to be the radio. its more of the antenna reception or cross modulation. when ur on the preset station was the display blinkng? and when the station ur listening to is the right FM band? lets say ur listening to 103.1 and the announcer says thank u for listening to 103.1 fm? if so try redoing ur presets again chances are u were in half way the radio bands FM band limit. sorry i work with RF its kindda hard to explain what im trying to say. but try doing the preset again on a clear day. and if that doesnt work mazda ordered u a new one right?

No, the display is solid, looks completely normal, just no sound.

Yep, the radio station is the correct one, just no audio when selecting from the presets

I actually re-did the presets... I kept the same stations but put them in a different preset button. The preset buttons still did not work but the same station on a different preset worked fine.

So, it is the preset channels on the radio itself, regardless of the frequency it is tuned to... and yes, they are getting me a new radio. Just posting in case it turns out to be more than an isolated failure.

Have you tried to unplug your negative battery terminal for 1h to let the CPU reprogram ? Can help

Just a quick update, I took my car into the Dealer yesterday and they replaced the radio, which works fine now!

Unfortunately, they broke the radio antenna cable in the process of replacement, so now they radio holds and plays the presets and all stations normally, but the reception is terrible! (pissed)

They have already ordered a replacement cable and they will be installing it next week...They will also be providing me a loaner car while they do the repair so they can take their time (and presumably not break anything else!) (rolleyes)
