f#@*in Illuminas...

If I overtighten the pillow mounts on the Tokico Illuminas will it harm anything? Im tired of this loose spring noise coming from the right rear strut. I know the directions say not to tighten the top part more than around 43ish lb/ft of torque.. but man that spring is making more noise than a ghetto ass white kid's trunklid.anyone?

oh yeah.. I have Eibach prokits.. if that makes a difference.

Put a washer in there. If you put too much torque it'll break the piston rod. Also make sure the rubber spring isolators are seated properly.

I did the washer thing already, helped out a bit.. but not much... I just want to torque the pillow ball mount down a little tighter than it says in the instructions and see if that helps, but I didn't know if torquing it down would mess with the adjustability part.

Bah..... I'm just gonna have to take the strut apart for the 3rd time and make sure everything is sitting right, then tighten it down. Maybe I'll add another washer just in case. this sucks.

Try tie-wraping the spring to the strut.

I have illuminas and mp3 springs and no noise or clunking.

I have friend using tokico HPs blue on his Civic and told me the shock is not much harder than the stock one, almost same. If it is true, i will probably just change my P5 spring to Eibach Prokit with my stock shocks. any idea?

Hmm, how do I go about tie-wrapping the spring to the strut?

And as far as some people getting the noise and others dont. I think it comes down to this: Sedan owners have a problem with the right rear strut for some reason. Numerous people have complained about noises coming from that point. However, it seems that the strut only makes noise when lowering springs are added and are smaller than the MP3/MSP springs. At the same time, I have a friend who also has the illuminas and eibachs, but he has a P5 and doesn't get the noise at all either. The only thing that throws this theory off is that Matthew up above is saying that his makes noise also, but I wonder if its the same noise?
So I really dont know why it's doing it. But I can say for sure that it is coming from the upper section of the strut, and it is the right rear for sure.
It sounds just like the spring is loose, which makes sense since the springs dont even need to be compressed when installed(no extra pressure to hold the spring in place). Plus the whole thread ordeal at the top Im sure has something to do with it as well.

like I said in your other post, I have the same squeek coming from the rear right. I know I installed everything correctly and I did not scratch the rod or anything so I know nothing is wrong. I guess this is what happens when you go aftermarket. I am not worried though. My fix is just to crank the radio up som more.

Dunno what to tell you here man... i have the illuminas not the HPs. Plus thats a different car. I assume by hardness you mean stiffness? And in that case, is your friend also accounting for the fact that it might be his tires not being able to live up to the struts potential?

/rant
I had stock struts and Eibachs in for less than 20K and my struts went bad pretty quickly, I drive pretty hard obviously. And another thing, if you end up getting a bigger sway bar you should think about the fact that the stock endlink tab may not be able to hold the amount of force it will be given. The HPs have a reinforced tab to handle it.
/end rant

haha then you are more tolerant than I am. :)
But I just dont believe the in the whole, "it happens when you start messing" thing. If other people don't have a problem, then I dont want one either.

Use a plastic tie wrap/wire tie and attach the spring to the spring perch of the strut. Some people have said that it has helped.

All the protege's sedan's and 5's all have noise issues when dropped with the right rear.

That shouldn't be true, most of the performance difference should come from the shock, not the spring. But if you don't upgrade your shocks to aftermarket, you won't be able to upgrade your rear sway either, as a stiffer one would break the endlink tabs clean off your stock shocks.

Tokicop HP's are GENERALLY at least 50% stiffer than stock according to Tokico in an interview in SCC.

our stock shocks are relatively stiff to begin with so it's noa huge improvememnt

I just installed my illuminas and espelir springs this afternoon and will update if I start hearing any noises. So far, so good (guitar)

Well for me the improvement was huge. Curves that used to body lean at 50mph can now be taken at 65 with no lean, or 70-75 with the same amt of lean. Highway merges which used to lean at 35mph, now don't lean until 55mph.

Plus I'm running rb springs, which are only slightly stiffer than stock.

The actual ride itself is a big difference, you feel a lot more of the road. Bad roads will beat up your kidneys more. But strangely the suspension actually bottoms out less.

dont do it

i went with just springs on my stock struts and the stock struts have gone to s***

Maxx Mazda and I have just installed Illuminas in the rear of my car (front struts are still good..and can't afford all 4 right now). There is a squeak at the right rear. Sounds like the spring is loose or something. We put 2 washers in each strut. So..mine goes like this: strut-washer-pillowball-washer-bolt.

Handling is excellent. I have it set on 3 and..wow....just wow.
