I was wondering what the difference was between the Ion turbo-back and the Essential Speed's full exhaust is......

Also what is the S-pipe and mid-pipe. What do they connect to....From what i have read i think the S-pipe connects to the turbo...If not where does it connect....and also is the mid-pipe and downpipe two different sections or jus different name....

All im really askin is if i can get a better description of out exhaust.....THANX

The "S-Pipe" seems to be a forum term. The Mazdaspeed Protege has a two-piece downpipe. The second portion of it (the non-S part) is actually the same on non-MSP cars.

A mid-pipe generally is a pipe that replaces the main cat.

So you have the head, turbo manifold, turbo, 1st section of downpipe ('S' portion), 2nd section of downpipe (kind of 'J' shaped), cat section (both cats are in this section), then the rest of the pipe to the back of the car.

I believe that's right, it's been a while since I've had stock exhaust. :)

EDIT: I found some pictures in one of my Imagestation galleries.... haha

Not the best picture, but this is the 2nd section.

This is the 1st section ("S-Pipe")

They don't seem to be working (Imagestation and this website seem to have issues). If you can't view from here I can send you the links off the board if you like.

Ion integrates the S-pipe and J-pipe into one piece, and has 3" piping all the way back. There are some pics in this thread:

The essential speed exhaust says it is 3" piping all the way back, but it looks in the pictures like it starts out 2.5" on the DP and has a conversion to 3". Here are some pics:

Ion has more proven results but is also expensive. If you are looking for another option ********** is making a turbo-back exhaust. It will have a 2.5" to 3" conversion on the mid-pipe, and will use a HKS C-Ti muffler that sounds great and is by far the best looking. They are not done with the prototype, and thus have not set a price and started selling but here is a thread on it:

Wait so does the Essentail one replace everything from the turbo back or no....Is it an actual turbo-back exhaust

Also what is the Magnus exhaust????

If you can give me website and stuff that would help a bunch.....thanx

Save your $$$$

Those are all nice exhaust systems, but you must have nothing better to do with your money. Go with a custom set-up. You get exactly what you want and you save a wackload of cash for other mods.

When was the last time you priced out a one-off exhaust system built from mandrel bent stainless steel?

If Corksport could actually produce their products, their power series is probably the best deal out of any of the vendors here- $375 bolted on to the j-pipe. But, you have to wait like a month or more for it.

What do you mean? Cork Sport has sold quite the large number of the Protege exhaust systems.

Their systems are made in batches or runs. That's the only way to get the price that low. There was a period where way more than expected were sold. That's an intended stocked item for them though.

Not that long ago

One month ago before I got my exhaust. That is why I went with 3" turbo-back CRUSH-bent, aluminized steel. $350.00CAN + the cost of the 3" hi-flow cat (total = $450.00CAN).

1. At 3" the smallest the radius of the pipe gets in the tightest bends is 2.5-2.75". Even 2.5" is bigger than stock so you can only stand to gain there.

2. SS would be nice for longevity and for appearances, but longevity only matters if you are going to keep your MSP for the next 20 years, and when are you going to show people the underside of your car, other than your muffler tip? If you are going to jack up your car and show it off then that is another matter, but SS is not a necessity. Nice yes, but necessary no. If you are worried about heat issues or about appeance you can always get it powder-coated or thermo-coated.

Oh, I see. Can't complain with that- I ordered one from them last week (July 23rd ish) and they didn't give an explanation, just that it probably wouldn't be at my doorstep until the beginning of september, and I got frustrated because it seems like alot of vendors on this board take a while with parts.

Thanks for clearing it up! Now I can happily place orders from them in the future.
