exhaust Question

So I know that the MS3 runs extremely rich....and I know that there have been some turbo issues...so my question is I have noticed a large puff of smoke coming out of my exhaust when I downshift and punch it so has anyone else had this problem? and could this have something to do with my turbo or is it just how rich the car is?

It runs extremely rich so there arent any issues with the turbo, once you start leaning it out you could run into problems. These things smoke a bit, its what they do, see what happens if you do a downpipe and or test pipe.

I added the PG testpipe on sunday, and alrady had the 2 resoators and muffler cut out. That s***'s ridiculously loud now! haha, here is a tiny video just after the install:

sounds good man!! now, when you need to do civilized driving, stop and go, or haul around the elderly, how does it sound at idle, cruising, etc. Does it drone??

I have the corksport dp/rp and its louder but not annoying, you can phase it out if you want to. I like the volume, just want something more aggressive sounding

^^
but from the top, no issues. if you smoke at idle, then start looking into it more

Sounds effin good! Even the overrun sounds good. I've only got one resonator out but I'm thinking of doing either the muffler or the other resonator, not sure how loud I wanna go. Just looking for sound.

I first took out the back resonator and muffler, it sounded nice but certainly not very loud at all. It sounded VERY nice with 2 resonators and the muffler out. It was bassy and had a very nice clean/performance sound to it like that. With the testpipe in there its obnoxiously loud now. More "gargly" sounding to me and is louder inside of the car as well. The sound in the car is much much louder now, and not nearly as calming and quiet to drive.

Overall I would recommend just the back 3 items out for the optimum and best sound. But if you want the performance and put in the testpipe it may be too loud unless you like it loud or aren't affraid to possibly get a ticket. But if you put in a testpipe, I would suggest leaving 1 resonator in just to calm things down.

i love my test pipe

dude mine is super loud man its crazy, sometimes I like it like that and it sounds pretty awesome, but sometimes its just too much! For you if you plan to chop some things off I'd do it 1 at a time until you hear what level of sound you like.

I couldnt imagine how loud a full 3-inch turbo back without any resonators would sound haha. That must give headaches from freeway driving

Ok this may be a dumb question but I am new to having a turbo...so is a test pipe and a down pipe what is the difference in the two????

The downpipe is for the first section of exhaust pipe that bolts upto the turbocharger itself. This also houses your primary O2 sensor, a catalytic converter (number 1 of 2 for us) and then your secondary O2 sensor (normally with an extension to keep your CEL off).

The mid/race/test-pipe replaces the second catalytic converter. After that it's the cbe (cat back exhaust). Some people get a TBE (turbo back exhaust) which is basically a CBE + midpipe.

Actually, wait a second, SU (street unit) has a nice diagram on their site.....
I can't link, but go there and look in the mazdaspeed3 stuff.

here is the pic from the SU site, it was very helpful when I was first looking at what I wanted to do:

nvm it wont link up, but go the the SU website and click the mazdaspeed3>exhaust and it will come up at the top of the page
