Exhaust modification help

First, let me say that I have searched and came up with little help. Secondly, I have searched through youtube, but the volume and tone are not always accurate.

I LOVE my MS3 and LOVE the fact that it is quiet while cruising. I love the throaty burbly sound some exhausts make on our cars, like a 350Z or R32 sound but because of cost and volume, I am considering removing the factory muffler and/or the resonator(s).

Of course, here is the dilemma, I want to enjoy my quiet cruising but love the deep throaty burbles at take off and want a bit more growl at wot.

I know I probably can't have EVERYTHING I want, but I am worried that no resonators and no muffler will be too loud for me. And wouldn't replacing pieces with straight pipe only make it sound more like rice, and not deep?

Experiences?

straight pipe would probably sound pretty good, but really loud and probably not that quiet while cruising. It wont sound like rice, remember this isnt a 1.6L NA engine. just the fact its turboed its gonna sound a lot different.

Just take off the 2 bolts that connect the 3 mufflers to the cat and it will be quieter at idle somehow and sound like a scoobie boxer motor when you accelerate and cruise.

You can check the vids in my sig..I like my sound and its not to loud when cruising.I removed 1 resonator and the muffler and added a testpipe..I have a vid with the testpipe and without.

SharkDiver, damn man, I love the sound on your speed! I've lived with really loud cars though and I'm passing that point in my life. I want to be noticed, but not ALL the time ;)

Anyone think removing one or two of the resonators would give me the sound I want without too much added volume?

Think the dealership would know/care if I needed warranty work??

My car has been to the dealer alot and they never said anything about my exhaust.I remove my testpipe for dealer visits tho.You could go and remove 1 resonator and see how you like the sound. You may want to just get a testpipe and leave the rest of the exhaust along and see how that sounds before you cut up your stock exhaust.Just take baby steps untill you get the sound you like but I do think a testpipe is a must for some better sound and a little more hp.

yeah just leave one resinator in otherwise it will get loud with just straight pipe. you can always have flanges welded on where you take stuff off so you can easily switch between different combo's for your favorite sound/setup

something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7jGYnhbQQU

best of both worlds .... loud when you want it, quiet as a mouse when you don't.

I have heard this thing on a P5 recently, sounds great.... only concern would be getting around the tuning issue of opening and closing the pipe.

looks like you can vary the amount of opening too...

just remove 1 resonator, preferably the one closest to your muff and if doesn't sound aggressive enough then go back and remove another. It's a cheap mod. $50 for 2(muff and resonator) removals.

I removed my rear resonator and muffler and put straight pipe in there. A little more bassy in the car but VERY slightly, car has a great sound to it. Nothing crazy or annoying in any way it is a little more throaty and actually pretty calm. Even at WOT its not loud by any means. But the turn whines a bit more now with less backpressure there adn THAT too sounds sweet!

Mine is free and takes less than 10 minutes. Just take off two bolts and it will be louder than removing the resonators.

This is what I'm thinking....

Testpipe = easy to install and easy to uninstall if needed. About $150. If I need louder, then I can remove extra resonators. You guys think this will change the sound more than a resonator removal?

To clarify, do you mean disconect where the cat meets the factory cbe??

I haven't done the RP yet but people said it makes lil to no difference in sound. I have 1 res and the muff removed and i think it sounds great. I plan to remove the last res and install a RP soon. I'll let you know how it goes...unless you get it done before me haha.

I did something like that YEARS back on my 300ZX. I opened the muffler up and put some washers in the gap and then bolted it back up. Gave me about 1/8 inch gap (exhaust leak) but damn that s*** made it loud! Easy and free to do!
