Exedy Stage 1 clutch

This is more a question about others experiences with this clutch than anything. I have about 50k miles on this clutch and it just started to slip in 5th gear....

I am curious how long this clutch has lasted those that have used it for awhile.

I drive this car everyday and autox on the weekends... is 50k a reasonable amount of life? I figured it would last alot longer considering it can hold alot more tq. than my stock internals can throw at it.

i think it should last a bit longer than that mine lasted to 170,000kms and then still had life in it but the mechanic decided to switch it cuz he thought my clutch was broken not the diff

exedy stage 1 is rated at 202ft/lb wheel torque. i have about the same miles on my stg 1 and it just started slipping tonight in gears 3,4,5. but then again i've been putting out over 243ft/lbs for a while so i think it held pretty damn good... if only they had more choices for the protege other than the stg 1 and 2, i would definately stay with them. the stg 2 is only rated 229 ft/lbs :( i'm leaning more toward ACT HD pressure plate and G6 disc, 343ft/lbs should do me for a while

I have about 90k on mine now, and it's still doing great. (crosses fingers)

Stronger pressure plate = less slipping & thus longer life. Sorry, but you're incorrect. ;)

A heavier pressure plate does you no good if your not strong enough to use it as a result 99% of people end up riding the clutch and burning it out. OE is the way to go. They used it for a reason and the people that decided to use it are much smarter and much better paid than us

That's user error. Nothing to do with the clutch. ;)

I was shocked at how my Exedy Stage 1 held my near 350whp for several years (12k miles) then one day in 4th it started slipping and that was it. Totally exceeded my expectations and feel if I had 100 less hp would have last 10x longer. Since the disk still had plenty of life on it just glazed over a bit :) Stock feel and engagement too.

Well my stock clutched lasted to about 94k miles, using a Spec Stage 2+ since then and im at 128k now and all is good. Everything is apart for my car and the clutch still looks great. Only issue is that it squeaks pulling out in first sometimes. Only happens once and awhile and its not the bearing cause its brand new and everything works like its supposed to. It happened to my friend with a Spec Clutch aswell.

So since most people cant use it right why spend 300+ dollars on a clutch when an OE is 100? Even HiPo V8s don't need staged clutches if you can drive them. Go back to OE unless you really feel like wasting money. Just because it sounds cool to say you have a stage 1 clutch doesnt mean it's not a waste of money

Bcuz, I'm not most people. (rofl) I am laffing @ the fact that you keep trying to use human error to say that "staged" clutches as you refer to them, are inferior. Just bcuz some dumb dumb ricers can't drive worth a s***, means that aftermarket clutches are no good? Plz... (gtfo)

Btw, those "Hipo" V8's have clutches that are designed with beefier pressure plates and higher resistance clutch materials to hold the extra power from the factory. You act like every OE clutch is the same. If the that "Hipo" V8 had the clutch I use in my Protege, it would burn that clutch up in a matter of weeks, if that. Because more power requires a stronger drive-train to deliver the power.

Honestly, read & listen here. If you make more than stock power, you need an upgraded clutch to hold the power. That's it, story over. Beefier/stronger pressure plate = less clutch disc slipping which equates to longer clutch life. Period. (hi)

i swear by spec clutches. ive never had any issues with them. act and exedy are over-rated. christ the spec stage 2 is rated for 309 and is 329 shipped. can't beat that. my old one in my fp-de had over 100k on it when it went and i abused the **** out of it. i have a little over 1000 on my stage 2 in my fs-de and i started beating it a little early (i know :/ but i couldnt refrain) and 0 issues.

i don't think exedy is overated, if anything they underate their s***. they list the stage 1 at 202ft/lbs at the wheels. many of us have well over that and no problems. i beat the s*** out of my car a lot, im surprised it lasted this long. 2+ years 40,000+ miles 30,000+ with the turbo. and the slippage isn't that bad, but it's there so it's time to upgrade.

matter of personal opinion. im not saying they are bad clutches at all, but i prefer the feel and engagement of spec. to each their own though.

"Overrated" gives the connotation that you have had a bad experience with them... Just fyi.
