Yes, the Evo would have been easier to work on and even easier to modify...but IMO it would have not stand to the abuse I gave the STi. The STi is far more stought in its driveline than the Evo. I did over 100, 6000rpm launches at the drag strip. It is one tough built car.

just woulda needed a new clutch from that abuse. the other drivetrain components are pretty stout, plenty of the big dogs are all stock in the driveline except for the clutch. in stock form or relatively stock they take abuse pretty well. buschur's 8 second car has this done to its driveline (and it runs with hoosiers on all 4 corners):
STOCK front axles, STOCK rear end, STOCK driveshaft, STOCK transfer case
Exedy Triple Disc Clutch
Bushwhacker Transmission
Driveshaft Shop Stage 5 axles (original design)

i personally don't see the point in drag racing these cars, but that's just me

I dont know, from what I have observed in our area...most Evos have had some type of tranny/gear problems...differential problems. And the highest Hp in our area just past the 400hp...so not extremely powerfull in contrast to other areas.

the earlier ones (03s mostly) were more problematic than the later ones, but it's never because of the power that they fail. there's a tsb i believe for synchros in some of the earlier ones. most diff problems come up when people use wrong fluids in them, they're picky. the parts do fail for some people but not normally from power/abuse. most people just replace the clutch and are good, but there are definitely some bad apples out there. assuming you don't get a bad apple, you're pretty good until you start running 10s or quicker

well an sti or evo would be a good choice, but personally I like to see different rigs sometimes. Lots of evo's and sti's running around, not alot of built turbo protege's. Just imagine the look on the sti/evo owners faces when they are looking at your protege tail lights.(shocked)
So the choice is up to you. Going the STI or Evo route is the more traveled maybe "smarter" route. Going the ES-T route is more of a challenge, a bit more unique, maybe not "smart", but fun!
You would have fun in any of them.

EVO... way to common and it screams "i think I am JDM"... STI... bad ass car, but like Pirana said they start making major noise and they DO break down after X... amount of miles just like any other car... the EVO and STI are both made for rally racing and yes street sriving also... I say be differant and stick with the Protege... maybe just give the FS motor a few years... the STI and the EVO motor have been out forever, and have all the kinks worked out.

the FS engine has been out since at least 93 when it was used in the ford probe/mazda mx6. the 4g63 first appeared in 89, not too much different, they're both teenagers

yeah... but how much crowd went to the mitsu vs the probe.... I wold never have bought a probe.... so if you think about it.... most of the "serious testing and modifications have been done since the Mazdaspeed came out.

either STI or EVO, dont get ms3 or put the money into your protege. keep in mind that STI's are boxter engines, im assuming at least cause my friends 04 wrx is, it took 12 hours for the spark plugs to be changed professionally!! so the evo is way easier to work on, but it matters which one you like the look of more, i'd go evo but i did stop and check out a black STI with gold rims at the dealer today, it was incredibal.

I sincerely hope that it was meant to be 1.2 hours...it took me 30 minutes to do mine, in my house. But the idea is there, they are difficult to work by your own. The STi is more civilized, and has a better interior. The Evo has more aftermarket support. Like someone said, the best is when the STis and Evos see your Protege tailights! I have been every route, STi and even NSX...I came back...the thrills I get with my MSP are greater than the thrills I had with the STi or NSX. But its up to you, to do whatever excites you. Go test drive an used Evo or STi, theyll let you do it (new ones are hard to test-drive). You will never get the traction of any of the AWD cars, but again, in the highway is a totally different ball game.

people have actually been modifying probes for a while, check out probetalk.com (i owned a 93 probe gt as my first car). true the msp did make things more widely available, but rods, pistons, etc..., have been available for a long time. it isn't lack of available parts that hurts it, it's lack of market, and given that the engine isn't in production any more, things aren't going to get better. you will still be able to get any part you need for it just like always, but you'll be paying more and it'll be harder to come by, those are the drawbacks of the protege. nothing wrong with it, but giving it more time isn't going to help anything

and people suggesting getting the evo, just stop. the original poster is in canada. they do not sell the evo in canada, it is not legal to register an evo in canada, he cannot get one. an sti is his only option

really, well i took a look under his hood and couldnt even find the s***, he has an 04 wrx and they kept it at the dealer for a whole day. he told me they said 12 hours to do it, and it blew my mind. but i guess it was free labor so. (cool)
