Enging nightmares

Ok, I admit... I'm an angry wife.

My husband bought a protege 5 a couple of years ago. Only a month after the warranty expired, the engine BLEW! It has been sitting in his parents garage for a year because, in the time since he bought the car, we've had two children.

We have been quoted $2,000 $3,000 (and more) by every local mechanic that we can find. We jsut can't afford it.

A large chunk of the cost of getting it fixed will come from having the engine pulled.

As it stands, we are forking out $350 a month in insurance and car payments on it to let it sit in a garage. If we let it go back to the dealership in the condition its in, we will still be responsible for paying off the balance (several thousand)

Can anyone give me any suggestions as to what we can do? I can buy the engine for about $450, but everyone keeps quoting me $350 for freight shipping. Then I would have to find someone who knows how to swap engines (and has the tools to do so) We barely have cash at the moment, only to be forking out so much to let that car sit in a garage. My own car got broken into because my husband works in a really bad part of town. (As a result, I have a huge HOLE in my drivers side door where they popped the lock and the door no longer opens from the outside....which we ALSO cannot fix.)

My concern now is that my car is just about ready to die. If it does, we're screwed as we will never get the cash or financing to buy another.

I'm about at my wits end. Hell, if I had the tools and the muscle (mostly the tools) I'd have my toucas out there doing it myself (I do all the work on my own car)

If you have any ideas, PWEEESE let me know!

Thanks for letting me rant. (bang)

You might be able to find an engine at a local junkyard which would help you save on shipping. www.car-part.com is an excellent site for searching junkyards, so if there was one close enough, you could probably pick up the engine yourself. I think you can rent a U-haul pickup truck for about $20 for one day if you need that to transport the engine.

As far as the actual task of swapping the engines out, maybe some generous local forum members could help you with tools and/or labor. There are regional sub-forums on this site for all areas of the US. Pick your state and try posting in there for more location specific information.

Good luck.

Yeah, the engine is a b**** to take out. Really time consuming. It should cost you $1500 or so with the new engine.

We have already checked the local junkyards.... none have ever had them.... those kind of cars are usually sold whole to dealers.

Is not $1500...its no less than $2000, and even that was a low estimate.

I don't know what we're going to do. We still owe nearly $10,000 on the thing (the loan was for nearly $25,000) we're buried with the stupid thing and we have no choice but to keep paying on it AND keep full coverage insurance on it. (if we drop the insurance, Mazda will put us on their own, which would cost three times a much)

*bangs head on desk*
Anyone want to buy '02 Protege with a hosed engine? (just kidding! lol)

I was saying that it SHOULD be about that much. You just have to look around more for the engine itself and have a reputable mechanic. I forgot how many book hours the engine swap.

It sucks man.

Its seized up (don't ask me how it happened cause we;re not really sure) We've been told that it would cost just as much to rebuild it as it would to buy another one.

Ummm... in my first post, I told you that we don't have the $2,000 that we have been quoted locally. Why did you think we'd be able to afford $4,000? Not meaning to be rude or anything.

Our problem is that we have absolutley no money to fix this car, if we let the dealership take it back, it will only trash our already bad credit (we'd still be required to pay the car off) On top of it, our one car is on its last leg (thats another story) and we don't even have the money to fix it.

Two years ago, I put my entire inheritance from my grandfather into fixing his "silver bullet"...after he hit a chunk of cinder block in the highway and bent two of his rims. I spent over $700 on new (used, factory) rims, tires, and a battery (because the damned car sat for three months when we didn;t have the cash then)

Now, I am sitting here, my own peice of crap car falling apart when the "mid life crisis mobile" of his is eating up $350 of our earnings every month just to sit in a garage and we can't come up with $2000 or more to fix it. I don't understand why he bought it in the first place... he knew we couldn't afford it and there was NOTHING wrong with his very nice (VERY PAID FOR) Cavalier.

Forgive me if I am getting on my soapbox and being a royal crab, but i hope you can imagine how frustrating this is. I REALLY need some tips or suggestions besides "buy a new engine."

Do people actually pay any kind of money for a car that they'll ahve to sink $2000 worth of parts and labor into? Has anyone been in this situation?

Angry Wife.

Depends...will they finance someone who is 10,000 (not including the car) and has a creit score of 460? Not joking. I lost my job due to pregnancy and we never recovered.

Belive me, we thought about a loan and financing but even if we did find someone who wouldn't laugh us out of the building, it would only make our situation even worse.

I know the feeling. We thought about refininacing the house with a lower interest rate. Then pay off the car and have Mental Addiction Motorsports build us a "built" motor.

Did you ask them for an engine on a Protege5, or for a FS-DE 2.0L engine? Why am I asking? This engine is the exact same as
* Protege5's
* Mazdaspeed Proteges
* Mazda Protege (forgot which trim)
* Mazda MP3

My buddy up north by Chicago found one for 400. Was the shipping you figured from this area? What radius?

What happened to the engine? Find a friend who's a mechanic and have him/her look it over. For all you know, it's as simple as a vacuum leak.

No..not a vacuum leak...engine is definately seized. My brother used to do the whole "Fast and the Furious, import fanatic performace racing" thing until he finally made the connection that his orange and black flame painted Eclipse was a cop-magnet, lol. He could probably do it, but he lives in Oklahoma and we live in Missouri. We'll be there this weekend for two but theres no way in Hades that we would be able to come up with a few hundreds that quickly...even if we did, he doesn't have the tools to do it and the only connections he has locally are with a body shop. No one he knows has one of those....uh...er... engine crane... pulley...things.

Even if we could find someone to swap the engines for free, its still several hundreds dollars that we don't have.

damn... My All trac engine blew, and I didn't have money for another engine + install, so I sold it.....:( But good luck, may be try to ask other people to see if it could be fixed?
