Engine Ticking/Rattling

I have an annoying ticking/rattling noise coming from my engine. When my car is first started after being cold, it rattles really quickly and then stops when the engine begins to idle and warm up around 2000 rpms. Once the engine has settled down, the noise is nonexistent until I put it in drive and begin to use the gas pedal. The noise typically comes back closer to 2000 rpms while driving in any gear but 5th, but the longer my engine runs and the warmer it gets, the sooner the rattling comes when rpms are raising. I can also hear it cruising on the intersate in 5th gear doing 70 at 2500 rpms once the engine is at operating temperature. I originally suspected the timing chain, but I bought a valve cover gasket so I could check the chain and found out after pulling the valve cover that my timing chain is nice and tight like it should be. I am clueless as to what else could be making this noise. Any help?

My Oldsmobile rattles like crazy but that is because the lifters and cams are worn out from having to drive it with a leaking head gasket.
In other words it sounds like you have some engine wear problems, which could be caused by any number of things: bad oil pump, non routine oil changes, leaking head gasket, etc.

However, I am just guessing because I haven't heard the noise or where it is coming from.

Which engine do you have? How many miles? When was your last oil change? How many miles between changes? Did it ever run low?
I believe the same thing is happening with my 06 2.3. When I'm accelerating or decelerating, the ticking isn't present (or very muted). Its when I'm maintaining speed it is at its loudest. Kind of like a loose chain on a motorcycle. It seems to slap around when there is no tension (maintaining speed) and when tension is applied (accel/decel) it "tightens" up and the ticking subsides.
I have 99,990 miles on it, and the ticking started liudly after a recent oil change/flush. Previously I noticed it a quart low and kept a close eye on it for two weeks before I had the chance to get the oil changed. It ticked mildly for those two weeks, now its loud and scary.
The mechanics diagnosis is a cracked piston skirt or connecting rod. The sound is from deep in the engine. I'm currently scrambling money to get a new engine.

Had this recently......mines a diesel version. Turned out to be the dual mass flywheel bolts rubbing. New DMF no further probs and pulls much stronger
