There is no seal between the block and trans either the rear main seal is leaking or the seal on the trans is. It's def easier to pull both with a hoist I was just saying how to do it without one
^^^ I was assuming he meant the gearbox input shaft seal...as are there any dry clutched cars with a bell housing seal? Not trying to sound like a dick, I'm asking haha...I haven't heard of any.
Ah, a lot of motorcycle gearboxes use a wet clutch. Some older exotic cars did too iirc. Its just like you said, the clutch rides in a bath of gear oil...pretty strange...but very uncommon on modern road cars.
Next question, since I am going to have the engine out and taken completely down, I am thinking I should have the block hot tanked and checked out. Since I am going through all the work to rebuild I should take the time and do it right, right?
Also what is the going rate, roughly, to bore, hone, hot tank, and install new freeze plugs in a FS-DE?
Well it shouldn't be any more than any iron block 4 cylinder engine. If you truly have it disassembled, degreased, and ready to go i'm sure they'll give you a close estimate over the phone. So it would mostly depend on the shop doing it. Spec boring, honing and hot tanking aren't exactly that difficult if the pieces given to them are ready....or labor intensive for that matter.
Sorry i can't give a definite answer...Going rate for spec boring (meaning boring within manufacturers limits, not making multiple passes for major displacement increases) is around $20-$25 a cylinder near me. Honing is usually included with that as a finishing pass, but thats JUST the machining...again, if they have to do literally anything to prep the block...remember the going rate for just some guy standing there with a wrench is $80/hour. No idea on hot tanking, don't think anyone local to me has one.
so i'd guess you'd be in the $300-$400, but it could be completely different in your area...
