Engine Start Button

I was just given an ignited performance engine start button, and I have no clue as to where the wires I need to tap/splice into are located.

Does anyone here know where I can locate the following wires and their respective colors?

1.- Starter wire
2.- 12 Volt source (when key is in ON position)
3.- Emergency brake light power

I think I will be installing the button in place of the lighter; does anyone have any suggestions for a better placement location?

Thanks.

If you are going to embark on a project like this, the factory service manual is your best friend.

Be very careful. This is an electrical system warranty ending modification.

The starter wire goes from the ignition switch to the main fuse block. It is Grey with a Black stripe.

12V key on is available in a number of places; pick one with a fuse like 10 amps or less. Look here for some information. http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123687033

I have no idea what you mean by "Emergency brake light power". This makes no sense. There is a Black with light green stripe wire from the PJB to the parking brake switch; the switch grounds the signal when the brake is pulled.

Rotus8,

Thanks for the information regarding the wire location and identifying colors.

I have no idea what you mean by "Emergency brake light power". This makes no sense. There is a Black with light green stripe wire from the PJB to the parking brake switch; the switch grounds the signal when the brake is pulled.

The instructions of the ignited performance engine start button come with an Anti-Grind in motion feature that requires for one of the wires to be connected/spliced to the "emergency brake light" so that the button will not function unless the emergency brake is engaged. Power to the button is completely cut-off when the emergency brake is off, in theory.

The installation seems to be pretty simple and straight forward, one wire to a direct power source and one ground (for the light source of the button). And two more wires, one to the starter wire and the other to another direct power source.

I have attached a copy of the instructions to this message.

Thank you for the help.

Well, the parking brake thing isn't going to work; the 3 brake switch is too integrated with the computer. Your switch is simply that - a normally open switch and a lamp.

You might be able to make it work by connecting the ground terminal to ground and the two 12 volt source wires to your cigarette lighter. The "splice into starter" wire goes to the Grey/black wire from the ignition switch. The normal clutch switch interlock will still work. But it will not cut off your radio or other stuff while cranking, which has the potential to damage the electronics. Also, if your buddy riding along pushes the button when the engine is running, you will get some interesting and expensive noises.

I think this is a bad idea. The switch is worth what you paid for it; pass it along.

My $.02.

Rotus8,

Thanks a bunch for the information and advice, I am glad that I did not pay for this. I got this as a gift from a friend who removed it from his Subie before selling it, It will probably be better to put it up on ebay.
