engine mod question

I am planning to go with the Spool Stage 1 kit (and only the stage 1 kit coz I drive an automatic and I heard the auto tranny can only hold 4-5psi) but before going into that direction, are there any other mods I can do to add more hp before adding the turbo?

I heard there are some mods that will make you loose power with the turbo such as cams. Is this true? what mods should I stay away from and which mods can I go ahead with; without losing power when I add the turbo to my setup.

also, how much hp is 160whp for an automatic???

thanks!

you don't need anything else to go w/ the kit, it comes w/ everything, 160 whp auto is the same and 160 whp manual but there is some hp loss in the torque converter (mabye an auto w/ 160 on the ground would have 190 crank give or take about 10) correct me if im wrong

you could get exhuast, but pretty much anything else you do will be removed after the turbo (ie, headers, intake)

i say just get the turbo

THEMan had some good stuff to say about the auto tranny the other day, search.

actually i'm debating on going turbo or NA right now. all I want is about 200 hp.

would going NA be cheaper or going turbo? also, what mods will I have to do if I go NA? Has anyone got up to 200 hp going NA with proof?

thanks!

no, no one even close.
I still say its not possible with a streetable car.

ummmm for NA probably a racing mazda header(that takes out the cats), intake a big bore throttle body some new cam gears and pistons. But dont listen to me cause i hardly know what im talking about, lol

extra or bigger injectors, a bigger throttle body on the protege is generally thought to do no good because of the fuel delivery system as it stands. the thing can be as big as you want it to be and the ECU will still only send X amount of fuel into the engine. you will still need some kind of fuel control.

you could go with adjustable cam gears, the intake and exhaust camshafts (buy em at SR Motorsports) and the HC pistons but to maximize power from those things you will need fuel control. Pro5OnSpeed is currently talking to Bell Engineering about using a fuel pressure regulator to deliver the fuel needed for an NA setup like listed above.

even then, you will not get 200 NA hp

For say, 150 whp NA and turbo will be about the same price, roughtly $2000-2500. Ater that the turbo becomes much cheaper as you increse price. Keep in mind a stock protege has only 105 whp.
Even for 150 hp or better put a 45 whp gain (all dynos being different) you need:
Intake
Exhuast
Header
no cats
Agressive Cams
possibly even high comp pistons.
Even a JSpec motor will only get you to about 150 crank hp as it needs the supporting computer for the other 20.

wtf only 105hp? I thought the 2002 ES had 130hp

proteges have 130 at the engine CRANK...by the time that power gets from the engine to the transmission through the flywheel to the WHEELS you are down to about 100. the Flyin Protege dyno has shown 95 wheel horsepower in a few tests.

hence when 1st called it "whp", meaning "wheel horsepower".

No thats ****** physics!
homosexuality has nothing to do with it!! :D

All cars have drive train lose. Not a single cars published horsepower is taken at the wheels although some are purposely underated, like the SRT/4.
