Not actualy sure whta the hell an EGR vavle is, or does for that matter, but apparently it filaed on my car, and the part is on national back order.....In other words the dealership owns my car for quite some time now. (help) :'(

I was hoping someone could educate me and tell me what an egr vavle does, along with the egr system. I just don't know what they were talking, I might know, but just not in the dealerships terms.

Lastly, I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find this part onilne, or if there is an aftermarket one so that i coul skip this drawn out waiting process.

Thanks again!

Good Luck with that. Ill get you as much info as I can.

From a post of mine back in march:

FYI....back to the dealer today for wires and a new coil. also found out the following is bad. back to the dealer wed. had to order the part.

EGR VALVE

Definition: The EGR valve is the main emissions control component in the exhaust gas recirculation system. The valve is located on the intake manifold, and opens a small passageway between the exhaust and intake manifold to allow a metered amount of exhaust to flow back into the engine. This reduces combustion temperatures and helps control the formation of oxides of nitrogen. The EGR valve is opened by the application of vacuum to its control diaphragm. Some also require a certain amount of exhaust back pressure before they'll open. On newer vehicles, the valve is electronic and uses one or more solenoids or a small stepper motor. The valve should remain closed while the engine is cold and at idle. It should only open once the engine has warmed up and is running at part-throttle. If the valve sticks shut (or is disconnected), NOX emissions will soar and detonation will often result (See Detonation and Spark Knock). If it sticks in the open position or fails to close all the way, it acts like a vacuum leak resulting in a rough idle, hesitation and possible stalling.

i think this is what has been happening to my car lately! I posted like a month ago on it...took it to the dealer, found nothing, didn't do anything. My car will just be idling, and after a while (at a stoplight) the RPMs dip down real low a couple of times. Is that what yours is doing? I guess the EGR is stuck partly open for some reason....? It's ONLY when idling, as soon as i gas it, it goes away and doest come back for a while (maybe 15 seconds). Keep us updated with what the dealer does/fix.

yup, just at idle...otherwise the car ran like normal. Tell them it's the egr and you want it replaced. they'll have to order it.(yes)

ok, thanks....i wish people would have answered my questions last month....i already was in for service. o well. also, do you think this is a bad thing? I mean, i dont THINK that it would do any damage or anything...but i dont really know, jw.

Thanks for all your help guys, some of you have the same problem i did. At ilde my car was diling at about 50 RPMS, no joke, below the first notch on the RPM gauge. And the worst part is, is actually caused the car to stall while moving, when I shifted into neutral....Hopefully the dealership will get the part in soon. Thanks for your help again!

Wow, I had no idea that detonation could be caused if that valve fails! What about people that put a filter on instead of recirculating it back into the intake?

i was told by the service manager to keep the rpm's down while waiting for the valve! i imagine that is why?
