EBay intake stalling problem

Hey guys, i actualy dont own a protege, rather i own an IS300 and although a newb here have quite a few posts under my belt at IS300.net so im not a total newb to forums. Just introducing myself first (hi) .
Alright so my friend has a red MP5 and i decided why not get him one of the cheapo ebay intakes and try to get him into modding his car. It came in yesterday and this afternoon we put it on. I took the ccar around the block and it was fine. He drive home (1/2 hour away) and calls me back saying that every time he sows down the car just dies on him and he almost got into an accident. Im sure i installed it right, heres what i did. I put on the first pipe and attached the purge thingy (sorry i dont know what it is) to the tube coming out of the block. THen i put the MAF sensor between the 2 pipes and finally the cone filter on the end. I put the brackets together and everything help up fine. Anyone know what could be causing the problem??? Ive searched around here and i could only find things about the throttle sticking and about how to mount the brackets......any info ASAP would be greatly appreciated, thanks a bunch.........and just for the record, not all IS300 owners are jerk offs, it just comes off that way on our forum, catch u guys later

theyre pretty tight but the one thing i noticed was that since the pipe is touching the brake cylinder the pipe doesnt sit very staight in the coupling. Do you think air could be getting in up there thus causing the car to stall?????

o yeah i forgot to mention that i disconnected the negative terminal as is procedure on all engine mod installs. I just disconnected but now that i think of it i forgot to press the brakes so the battery might not have drained completely. You think this could be the problem?

There is also..An intake temp sensor...(AKA Not the maf...) Make sure you get that from the stock intake..and install it!!

this exact same thing happen to me when i hollowed out my maf sensor. make sure that the sensor connecting to the maf is plugged in or the cars idle will fall to stal.

alright i got a chance to drive the car just now and when i turned it on it idled at abou 1k RPM then fell to about 750 RPM, jumped a little bit then shut off. I popped the hood and reset the ecu. This sured the CEL problem and the stalling problem. I drove it arond the lot a few laps and the car was fine although i noticed that the top pipe is hitting the brake cylinder and is making the pipe slip out of the coupler. He called me just now and told me that the problem is back again. What should i do, just recheck everything???? Im worried about that top pipe slipping out because of that piece its rubbing on. .What do you guys think? Sorry for all the questions BTW Thanks for all youve helped

Same problem i was having....you have to put a piece of rubber or something to make sure it doesn't rub..Or like me..YOu will wear a hole into the intake..which will case loss of pressure..and incorrect reading by the maf...

Make sure you really tighten down the clamps..and try to keep it as far away for the brake cylinder!!

Chas

you get wut u pay for ;) but dawm dude, hope everything goes well. glad to see everyone on here is so informative and helpful :) - chris

Make sure the MAF is facing the correct direction(plug should be facing the battery) and is plugged in. Make sure you have the right size clamps in the correct position. The MAF should be flat side up also. Make sure all of the sensors you removed are plugged in. I can't remember which sensor it is but it is located at top of the pipe in a notch in the rubber tubing right next to the intake manifold, Make sure that is pluged in and is sitting up right.

i say take that thing off and get the appropriate aem filter if you are concerned about fitment issues. there's nothing worse than a "performance" upgrade that causes your car to stall and almost cause accidents, especially if you are trying to get him into modding his car.

anyway, stalling with an intake is most likely the result of pressure loss somewhere within the piping. have you checked the hose that goes from the intake to the block? try checking to make sure the air temp sensor bung is snug. another thing, too, is to check to make sure all the plugs are plugged in and all the wires to those plugs are still good. i don't think the intake physically touching the master cylinder has anything to do with it...

if it keeps rubbing and you want to keep the ebay filter, try tying a strap from the intake tubing to a bolt on the block. there should be an extra hole there for a bolt... just get one of those metal strap things that can adjust and go from there. other than that, i have no clue without looking at it. maybe you can take some pics of the setup and all the connections and such for the gurus on here to check out.

*edit* i meant aem intake not aem filter. i'm a moron. it's late.

will take pics tommorow when i see him. I didnt mean for this to happen and believe me i totally agree with you get what you pay for. An intake for my car cost about 500 but with its upgraded ECU that things makes some beautiful power. I just didnt know a simple intake could cause such a mess. Another thin im speculating is that i might have put the Temperature probe upside down seeing as i just shoved it into the hole on the pipe. Could this be causing any problems??

MAF unpluged or wrong direction and or a sensor unplugged. Temp sensor postion does not matter so long as it is before the MAF close to the filter is its typical position.

Please if you can't get it to work your friend already probally has had enough and never wants to mod his car again. JK

Be safe though you can always return to stock and get it worked out to make the car drivable.

went back to stock today, only took us about 15 minutes. The car is running just like it was before this whole incident and one of these days when we have some free time we're gonna give it another shot. BTW, the problem was that the upper pipe kept coming loose and falling off the coupling. I tightened the clamps but it didnt do anything? THe reason its falling off is that it was hitting the brake cylinder and from tapping it so much it kind of came loose. Is there any way to prevent this?

the only way is to put a rubber stopper of some sort between the intake and the master cylinder so the intake isn't hitting metal on metal. otherwise, to prevent something like this from happening again, shell out for an AEM short ram. it's weird, some members have had great success with ebay filters, while others, like yourself, have had a horrible time with the fitment issues. oh, have you tried turning the rubber coupler from the throttle body and the intake around? i know for injen, one end is longer than the other and makes a world of difference in terms of fitment. just a thought...
