Dynamat?

Wasn't sure what category to post this in so I put it here. I would like to deaden or quite some of the in cabin noise my MS3 suffers from. It's the exhaust drone at cruising speed and at decelaration that is just a tad annoying. Basically I would like to be able hear my kids better from the back seat. I find myself having to ask the them to repeat things or say them louder over the exhaust just so I can understand. I also suffer from mild hearing loss, so I'm wondering would the Dynamat actually help my situation? Mods, if this needs to go in the Audio section, I apologize and you may move it.

Thanks a bunch

yea it would help, but it might bring out some of the interior noises if you have them. ie dash rattle, seatbelt squeak, trim crunches, etc

i think the main place the car needs it is the flooring. i don't think it would be necessary to put dynamat in the doors

Surprisingly my car is rattle free!!.....knocks on wood. I was thinking of possibly doing the trunk which I beleive would help with the exhaust noise?

save yourself from too much work and money simply dynamat around the trunk, wheel well and sides of the car where the muffler is located. be sure to apply it in a heated garage, depending on which dynamat you choose it does not like to be installed when it is really cold.

Quote from Dynamat's web page: "The temperature of the mat and application surface should not be below room temperature during fitting."

Look into RAAMat... it is a TON cheaper, and easier (in my experience) to work with than dynamat.

check out posts in the exhaust section; seems like someone replaced one of the stock resonators with a bigger one from magnaflow. If I recall correctly, that took care of the problem too.

All valid responses, thanks gents. Is installing Dynamat or equivalent a DIY project? I am fairly handy around a car. I do like the sound of the stock exhaust so I don't want to add a resonator, just quiet things down inside.

I did the entire floor in the cabin and trunk. 300% better. It's what the car needs from the factory. Greatly reduces road noise and helps with the exhaust too....except for 4th gear blasts on the highway :)

Did you do dynamat? I'm thinking of doing the trunk and doors. Does it add much weight?

Of course it adds weight, it is essentially asphalt deadening material.

If I were to do trunk/ wheel wells, and all four doors, about how much would that add?I could deal with another 50 lbs., but I don't care so much as to make it way heavier.

It would more than likely be less than 50 lbs (not much, but still less than that)

Ok, that's not that bad, 40 or so pounds really wouldn't make a noticeable difference. I'm also considering just the trunk kit, and that would also cover the wheels wells. Also, I want to do the speaker kit. I can forget the doors, as it's just too pricey.

Would the trunk kit help at all with road noise and such?

No, most of the road noise comes through the doors. One roll of RAAMat will do your whole care (with ensolite and adhesive spray) for $250.

I did use Dynamat. I had great success with it on my previous car. lbs wise, don't know. 50-75lbs maybe. Certainly nothing noticable. No care really especially when compared to how much it does for the car.

I did not do the doors. Most all of the noise to me was from the road, thus the floor and trunk were my main targets.

Great thread guys. I started looking into the products that have been mentioned here and I see that Dynamat and B-Quiet offer all of the specs that I need to review their products while Damplifier and RAAMat don't give me much more that sales propoganda. I wrote to the two that don't have much for specs asking them what their numbers are on Acoustic Loss Factor (ALF) which is what I'm most interested in. Maybe I just couldn't find the info with my marginal PC skills. Anyway it looks like I should wait until warmer weather to tackle this anyway. Glad I read through it before trying it now. Thanks. Ed
