is this an upgrade?.. and do they make a manifold to fit it? I tried a search on here and could not find much on it. Sorry if this is a repost or if its already been asked. Its just that I can get DSM parts for next to nothing, and I was thinking of running the dual bov setup with my HKS and then a 1st gen crushed/uncrushed bov.. Has this kind of turbo set up been done.. I know I can do the bov fitments. Thanks in advanced!

You could always have a flange fabricated. You could try, or just bite the bullet and upgrade to a GT28 type turbo.

a 14b turbo is pretty much a t25 turbo. the mazdaspeed protege's come with a gt25 turbo. it is the same thing but a ball bearing verison of that.

id say stick with the stock turbo or get a big one like a gt28rs.

The 14B is a pretty big turbo, much more capable than the T25, and doesn't get a lot of credit. People have gone 11's at 115-116 on it in the DSM world, running 20-25psi on it depending on gas used.

If you can get the parts cheap, and use a Mitsu-T2 adapter, or get the stock manifold reflanged, then I'd say go for it... I'd say at that point the stock engine would be the limit, not the turbo.

the stock dsm turbo can only take about 15-17 psi then they go bye bye. they really only get the car up to 210 to the wheels max with that turbo. a small 16g is a small turbo that can put out 25 psi and people can get 300 whp with that. maybe your thinking of that one, because the 16 g small looks like a small turbo, but it is pretty powerful.

You're probably thinking of the 2G DSM Garrett T25, which is a piece of crap above 14-15psi. The old Mitsu turbos (14B/16G) are actually pretty good. I've had 4 or 5 DSM's and know what they can do... and here's proof from others:

14B record: 11.815@116.330
16G record: 11.590@119.680 ('m going to discount the 9 second slip as probably a typo) :)
Big 16G record: 11.810@117.630

I myself ran a 13.6 @ 101 pretty easily on a 100k mile old 14B, with just an exhaust, fuel pump, and boost controller at 18psi. Probably putting down about 200-210whp at the time. This was on pump 93 gas. 116mph traps mean closer to 300-350whp range.

thats why I loved dsm's with minimal mods they can go quite well. Unfortunately they have more gremlins then my wallet wants to deal with ;) dsm stands for a few things. doesn't stay moving. disposable speed machine only reason I say that is that I owned them for a number of years.

ok that one car you listed was a race car w/ nos the other car in the 11's has a built motor and a ported turbo along with ported everything else lol. im not saying anythign bad about the turbo just dont expect to slap one on and be able to run those numbers. compared to other turbos the 14b is weak

Of course you're not gonna slap it on and run 11's... :) I'm just pointing out that they CAN flow enough air to get those numbers if you got the supporting mods.

Edit: And I don't think it's weak at all... it's one of the better OEM turbo's out there. Do you see any SRT4s, Evos, STIs running lower than mid-11's on the stock turbo?

Speaking of gremlins...the pro's have been known to have a few. Both turbos can easily blow a stock fs motor and tranny unless that's dealt with! I wouldn't worry so much about maxing out your turbo unless you plan to sink big $$$$$ to keep up with much more than 10psi give or take!!

yea your right, i was thinking of the 2g DSM turbo. thats why i was getting confused, lol.

Well I just wanted to see if it was a worth while upgrade. im not trying to run anything over 8 psi to be honest.. I dont want to zoom zoom boom =P if I go with a bigger turbo later its hands down the gt28.. But for now it was just a though rolling around my head. Thanks for the input guys.
