Drive Belts FYI

BOOSTR

1 OWNR MSP
Bought some belts at NAPA. The Alt-WP belt part number 25040347 is too short. Its made by Gates. The PS-AC belt part number 25040347 fits.

Took them both back and ordered Bando belts from Amazon. Used the numbers off of the belts that came with car. Got them for $18.95 shipped. Great deal and they appear to be better quality belts than the Gates.

5PK1165 (AC/PS) & 4PK920 (Alt/WP)

So the Amazon belts work?

Seems like a great price. I just hate ordering belts because I am always afraid that they will be the wrong length, causing me to have to reorder and send back......hopefully getting the right ones in exchange.

Yep, they are the exact same belts as what Mazda put on the car. If you or anybody uses those part numbers you will get the correct belts. Bando must have been the supplier. Amazon has the best prices it seems provided one of their vendors carries the part that you want.

There is no quality belt that would only cost you 18 bucks unless maybe it was used....Bando? Most likely it's a second line Dayco not Gates. Those numbers from the original belts are actual Gates production numbers. The K0 numbers are stocking numbers for organization by length

Bando has been an OEM Supplier for over 50 years. The belts I bought for $18.85 are brand new.
The Napa branded Gates belts are made of a different material and looked nothing like what Mazda put on the car and the Alt/WP belt did not fit. So your statement questioning quality is meaningless to me.

It's funny to me that just because someone has not personally heard of a certain company, automatically assumes that the product is s***.

I was looking at the Bando site and the part numbers they have for the '01-'03 protege are 5PK1170(PS/AC), an 4PK915 (WP/ALT). They only had it listed as 2.0 protege es. I see that you have a msp, is that the reason for the partnumber difference, or is yours different?

I can't shed any light on the part number difference. But I have not done anything to change or alter the location my alternator.

have you done your timing belt yet? I hear the original is Bando also. I tried looking for one for the '02 Pro, but nothing came up.

No confusion on my part. My Mazdaspeed Protege Owner's Manual Addendum clearly states to
1) Inspect at 96,000km or 60,000 miles
2) Replace every 168,000km or 105,000 miles
footnote says if vehicle is operated in cold districts (-18 C or O F) to replace it 96km/60m

Can you explain briefly how to install? i just got some gatorbacks, and need to replace ASAP, cause the old ones are almost done. What tools needed, and do i need to jack up the car?? Thanks

Sure not a problem. I've seen where some people posted that they did everything from up top but each time I have changed them I jacked up the car. All you need for tools are a 12 & 14 mm combination wrench and/or socket and ratchet in the same size and a 1/2" ratchet - 14mm socket.

Loosen the top bracket bolt(14mm) on the pwr steering pump. Now you need to loosen the adjusting bolt(14mm) lock down behind the pulley. Its a tight fit so use the boxed end wrench. Then back out the adjusting bolt(14mm) enough to drop down the pump and remove that belt.

Now loosen the alternator adjusting bolt lock down(12mm) and then back out the adjusting bolt(12mm) somewhat. It doesn't need to come out of the sleeve.

Then there's the alternator mounting bolt and it will be tight. So use a 1/2" drive ratchet and 14mm socket to loosen it. Push it towards the block and pull off the belt.

Put on the new WP -Alt first and then the Pwr St - AC belt. Pull back the alternator and tighten up the mounting bolt. Lift up the Pwr steering pump and tighten up the mounting bolt. Set the tension bolts on both making sure that the belts are tight enough but not over tight and then lock them down.

does anyone know the correct size for the gates belts? the store was wrong and this is my second time buying them (different store same car) and they cant seem to find any info. i need them ASAP so ordering the bando belts are out of the question, belt has already snapped and its the ALT belt so its the tricky one... the one they gave me was between 6-10 inches too short, it wouldnt even go on with the alternator as loose as it can get.

Try to get a Dayco or Goodyear from your local parts store. The NAPA/Gates one that I took back was not as short as what you ended up with. Strange.

And take a tape measure with you and don't leave the store unless the belt measures at least 17.5" when taped out. Just measured my original belt that I matched up to the Bando replacement.
