Drifting Can you do it?

Some kid reading this thread might go out and start "popping the clutch or gassing it hard" (whatever that means) or try to "carry a lot of speed or make sudden jerky movements on the steering wheel.........or ...... use the e-brake".

By popping the clutch in you are shifting weight, the same applies to sudden throttle input. In our FWD cars, the necessity to jerk the steering wheel to transfer weight or jounce the suspension into a slide is much more apparent. This can be proven at any auto-x or road racing track. The same applies to trail braking, yes weight shifting is what occurs in most situations to convince the car into a slide.

Drift is wasted speed. (Sorry, cart racer habits here. Every time you drift, you die)

I'm a big guy, so drift for me means I actually lose speed in a corner. I like to keep my tires on the road. Drift is fun for rallying, but I like grip on the road.

(God, I sound like an old fogey, in 24...)

The technical "definition" of a drift, is to have the rear end swing out while in a turn, thus you must create oversteer, instead of understeer which most FWD cars do.

First off.. the correct definition of drifting is having all 4 wheels sliding in in the same direction. Just having your back end swing out is only oversteer.

A power slide is a type of drift or also known as power-over. Which means that you use excessive power to overcome the vehicles traction.

There are many drift techniques that all do that do the same job.

The only drifting that works with AWD is drifting on snow or ice. The only drifting I can really do is using power. Otherwise..I'm stuck to the ground:)

ok...with that definition...

so are we in agreement that a FWD car cannot power-slide or power-over? because using excessive power will cause understeer instead of oversteer?

I just don't see how drifting on pavement is benificial to a FWD car. I don't doubt that it can be done, I just can't see it helping you come out of a turn any faster than holding a line.

I agree with you 100%.......drifting is just alot of fun.

OK OK, here it is guys, seriously.

Understeer - when the front tires say **** it and slide.

Oversteer - when the rear tires say **** it and slide.

Neutral - when both the front and back say **** it at the same time, and slide.

Neutral is the fastest way around a corner. If you enter a corner and both the front and back tires are turning at their limits this is the fastest way around.

Drifting is when all 4 tires are sliding, as said above, neutral, and is the fastest way around a corner.

Now there is drifting and there is DRIFTING. The drifting you see people doing at shows and when there are 2 cars drifting together and s*** like that is just show, it is not the fastest.

BUT, drifting, if done right, is the fastest way around a corner.

Thank you, goodnight.

so true drifting is going so fast around a corner that all wheels are squeeling because they can barely hold the line, right? Then using the steering wheel to correct any extra slipping of the front or rear.

Meaning any car can do it. I will agree to that. But the pictures posted above were not that. The ass end of the car was way out meaning some trickery was done to get it that far out, whether it was an e-brake or a quick jerk of the wheel I don't know, but once you are sliding sideways you are ripping at your tires and causing unecessary friction.

Like I said, neutral is the fastest way around a corner. The ideal way would be to corner and have all 4 tires at their limit.

Now when you exceed that limit and the tires slide you are drifting.

I drift my car daily. Why? because it is something I like to do and it is fun, and great practice.

Here is how I achieve it. I am only drifting on a pair of slow, 90 degree turns because the speed needed to drift all 4 wheels is alot.

These turns are complete 90 degree, very sharp, and I can drift them at 50-55 mph. I enter the corner at that speed and take a good line. The line I take plus the great suspension makes for a very neutral turn.

While in the corner, I use the throttle to steer basically. I can control rotation by lifting off or getting on the throttle. Using the throttle and a little countersteer I can exit the corner at about the same entry speed.

I would not try this on a faster curve. 50-55 mph is a slow drift. More mild corners would require alot more speed to do a 4 wheel drift.

Find an empty parking lot late at night and just practice. Get to about 40-50 and corner hard. Oversteer can be scary if you aren't used to it, so get used to the ass end sliding out.

Once you get that down try countersteering a little and see if you can control the oversteer. Once you get used to it you can stand on the throttle while couterstearing and try to drift all 4.

I am by no means a racer or drifter, basically wanted to drift so I started practicing and figured out how to make my car drice like I wanted it to.

You sure as hell can drift a 2nd gen RX-7 (turbo) I get nasty like that one called real life Initial D. Just never had the chance to f/with a bad ass skyline

Drifting just looks cool...there really isn't anywhere on my city streets to do it.

Too many damned pot holes, hell I'm still running on my winter tires, and it's sunny, and nice out, but I don't want to kill my rims on all the killer potholes, rather my steelies take damage than to replace a 17" rim.

Yea, I wanna do a S14-->S15 Conversion...but I kinda got off track (already shelled out money for JIC coilovers -.-;;;) I swore to buy my self a RWD project car...but the coilovers were calling my name I swear!!

You can guess what kind of car this is if you really have to.

and then you have the real drift master cars in the background. lets see, looks like a couple of 240's and a FC. then there's the poser in the front wheel drive sleigh:rolleyes: way to be

Try not to be so gay.

Just because I stuck it to you and showed you a picture of a fwd car drifting like you asked in an earlier post you don't have to be a hater.

Most of the time all I see on this board are people fighting, bitching, and complaining. But whatever gets you off, bro.

I have yet to see a forum where people didn't fight, b****, and complain...

...its amazing how people react when you don't have to comunicate face to face, and you're given time to absorb what others say and make a well thought out (maybe not all the time) response.

here's an idea mr i stuck it to you like i like doing to most guys, if you don't like what your reading don't hang around here. your posted a picture of some sh*tbox primered up civic that looks like its parked on that corner if not just yanking the e-brake which you don't have to do when your REALLY drifting a car. post all the pictures you want of front wheel drive cars doing donuts, burnouts, drifts, whatever! your still not going to convince me that a fwd car is a drift car or does drift like a real wheel drive car. keep it comming.

Little angry aren't we. I like your post, just as I expected. I don't need to continue on or keep anything coming for you. No use continuing a useless conversation. Enjoy your day.
